Letter to the Editor from Steven Leibowitz

Challenger for 1st Barnstable District State Rep.

Dear Editor:

I want to be sure you have every opportunity to know more about my campaign for State Representative in First Barnstable. With just a couple weeks left, it has been a pleasure getting to meet many people in the district, talk about my priorities, and hear your concerns.

One issue that cuts across party lines in our district is the environment. I'm endorsed by the Sierra Club of Massachusetts and Protect Our Cape Cod Aquifer, because of my interest, work and positions on environmental issues. No member of the Cape delegation serves on the House Committee on Global Warming and Climate Change, a significant opportunity to serve and make a difference. We can no longer take baby steps on climate change and I will lead that effort to protect us.

The state has not lived up to its fair share in education funding. I supported the Fair Share Amendment, which unfortunately did not make it to the ballot. I believe the Legislature needs to look at something similar to meet our responsibilities. My opponent voted against this. The foundation budget needs to be reformed and the state must better fund important things to us like regional transportation, reimbursement for special needs students and reimbursement when students leave for charter schools. Our property tax owners have been heroic in supporting education, but we cannot keep coming to you for overrides. You deserve better from the state.

Representative Whelan and the entire Cape delegation have been helpful in advocating for more resources to deal with opioids and addiction issues. I want to go a step further. What I have heard often is how hard it is to find those resources and specific types of help that are needed at any moment. We know there is no one path to a solution. I want us to bring all stakeholders together in one place. to lead the discussion on how we better coordinate services and moving forward, have a one stop, well publicized point of access for the public. I will put that together within 6 months of being sworn in/

I invite you to go to my website, stevenforstaterep.com for more information on the issues. My campaign has been endorsed by 119SEIU, the National Association of Social Workers- MA, NARAL - MA Pro-Choice PAC, Sierra Club-MA, former State Treasurer Steve Grossman, State Senator Jamie Eldridge and people I worked with as a member of the Brewster School Committee like John O'Reilly. Marie Enochty and more.

Thank you for your consideration, I humbly request your vote.

Steve Leibowitz, Brewster
