The Music of Gershwin and Bernstein

Saturday, November 10th @ 2:00 PM

Cotuit Library

871 Main Street

Cotuit MA 02635

508-428-8141

George Gershwin is best known for his work in the musical theater and Leonard Bernstein is most renowned for his instrumental and choral compositions. But there was a great deal of cross over as evidenced by Gershwin’s orchestral piece “Rhapsody in Blue” and Bernstein’s musical theater piece, “West Side Story.”  They were both talented pianists who performed extensively. Bernstein, who was twenty years younger, was greatly influenced by the music of Gershwin. This performance by Stephanie Miele and Lucy Banner will highlight the music each wrote for musical theater and for films.

Stephanie Miele (vocalist) lives in Falmouth and currently works as a piano technician tuning pianos. She graduated from the High School of Performing Arts in New York City (popularized in the movie and television show Fame) and obtained her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Boston University and Bridgewater State University. For 17 years, she was a music teacher in the Brockton school system and a librarian for 4 years at the Burkland School in Middleborough. She has sung with the Handel and Hayden Society and the Wintersauce Chorale in Boston, and has been active in community theater performing in a wide range of musical roles such as Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Eve in “The Apple Tree,” and Agnus Gooch in Mame. Stephanie is an avid fan of Broadway musicals and has given solo concerts interpreting the music of composers Jerry Herman and Richard Rodgers and the songs made famous by Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, and Judy Garland. Locally, she has been a guest soloist with the Falmouth Chorale, and has appeared at the Cahoon Museum, Highfield Hall and Gardens, the Cape Cod Cultural Center, the Falmouth Historical Society, and libraries, women’s clubs, and charitable organizations throughout the Cape. Most recently she performed a sold-out and extended program of the music of Rodgers, Hart, and Hammerstein in the Black Box at the Cotuit Center for the Arts. Stephanie lives near Menauhant Beach with her husband Lenny.

Lucy Banner is well known to Cape Cod audiences as a collaborative pianist for instrumentalists and singers throughout SE Massachusetts.  She holds degrees in piano/performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Ithaca College.  During the past years she has been a pianist for First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist Church and continues to be a collaborative pianist for Cape Cod's newly-established Open-Mic Classical.  She is a founding member of Trio Vivo, Classical music from an Uncommon Ensemble.
