Letter: "Bloated and Exploitative Size of Barnstable Town Government

from County Commissioner Ron Beaty

Speaking only as one individual citizen, I need to publicly question why on Earth does the Town of Barnstable have to employ in excess of 1,300 people, with nearly 100 of whom making over $100,000 per year?” (as of December, 2016) (Access the link provided below for further details.)

Speaking only for myself as a single elected Barnstable County Commissioner, I find these facts to be both somewhat abhorrent and difficult to fathom!

More transparency and accountability to the voters and taxpayers is obviously needed at the municipal level.

Moreover, it would honestly seem to me that the Town of Barnstable should seriously consider downsizing some of it’s unnecessary governmental components and bloated bureaucracy!

Do they really need all of those employees, and that many people making a six figure income?

In my opinion, local government is supposed to serve the needs of the public, not exploit the taxpayers for the benefit of a few elite bureaucrats!

Ron Beaty
