Mondays & Fridays, 9:30am

Do You like to Play Scrabble?... Come join the COA scrabble group and play with us! We are always looking for new participants. We meet on Mondays and Fridays at 9:30am, here at the COA.  Join the fun!

 

Fridays, Through February:

NEW SHOPPING OFFERING - Shaws 

Back by popular demand, the COA bus will be offering trips to Shaws in Harwich on Fridays through January. Shopping transportation is by reservation, preferably 48 hours in advance.  When you call to make your reservation, you will have a choice of the following: 830am Shaws, 9:30am Stop & Shop; 10:30am Stop & Shop; or 1:30pm Shaw’s. Once dropped off, shoppers will have approximately one hour to complete their shopping before the return trip to Chatham.  For more information, to register for the COA’s Transportation Program, and to make your shopping reservations please call 508-945-5190

AARP Foundation Tax Preparation

AARP Foundation Tax preparation is available free to taxpayers with low and moderate income, with special attention to those 60+ ensuring they receive applicable tax credits and deductions. AARP Foundation Tax Aide is offered in cooperation with the IRS. Chatham seniors will be served at the AARP regional site at the Chatham Community Center, appointments are now available. Beginning iPad Class

This class will cover the basics: Buttons and controls, Keyboard, Siri, Settings, Apple ID, Messages, Email, Safari, News, App Store, Facetime Audio and Video, and Troubleshooting. The cost to attend this class is $20. All Classes are held at the Chatham COA Colin Campbell Computer School, 193 Stony Hill Road, Chatham, MA 02633. Classes are open to residents of ANY town! Monday, February 4th, at 1pm

FREE MOVIE at the COA CINEMA: “First Man” Rated PG, running time: 131 min.

This drama is a look at the life of astronaut, Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the First Man to Walk on the Moon, on July 20, 1969.  The screenplay is based on the book by James R Hansen. Director Damien Chazelle and star Ryan Gosling depict the journey of Neil Armstrong.  Armstrong, along with his fellow pilots, including Buzz Aldrin (Corey Stoll), must work his way through the rigorous space program of the 1960s, sacrificing his personal safety and time with his wife Janet (Claire Foy) and their children to defy death and push the boundaries of human exploration. Starring: Ryan GoslingClaire FoyJason Clarke, Kyle Chandler and Corey Stoll.  Call the COA for reservations and transportation at 508-945-5190.

Balancing Act: FREE Fall Risk Screenings

Have you noticed that your balance isn’t as good as it used to be? Are you afraid of falling? Sign up to reserve a completely FREE 10-minute screening appointment at Chatham COA. The appointment is conducted by a Registered Physical Therapist, through the VNA of Cape Cod.  Learn how you can improve your balance and ways to stay FALL-FREE! Monday, February 11th: 12pm – “My Country Valentine” Luncheon Party and Show, Featuring Entertainment from: “Yesterday’s Country Band”

Join us as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, with a Luncheon Party and Show. This entertaining        5-piece country band is back at the COA by popular demand.  Since 2011, this group of semi-retired musicians have been playing for folks all over Southeastern MA and Cape Cod. Now, they are back at the COA to delight you, with your favorite old-fashioned country tunes. On the Menu is: Pesto and Mozzarella Stuffed Chicken, with a Roasted Tomato Sauce, and Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables, Dark Chocolate Cake with Raspberry Sauce for dessert. FREE Podcast Club, Led by Regina McDowell

A podcast is talk radio, but on demand. It's a series of audio episodes focused on a topic or theme that you can subscribe to and listen to whenever you want. Today, podcasts tend to be completely original content. By listening to a podcast, you use your brain in a new way, expand memory, practice empathy, and hone your discussion skills-- and you learn a great amount of interesting stuff, and laugh a lot! Our podcast Club allow us to sample many subjects, many ideas, many personalities, and hear some great stories! Come with your snack or beverage, relax in a comfy chair, and join the group.  We will create notes and follow up on how to access your favorite shows. The Podcast Club meets in the COA Library, the second Tuesday of the month. “Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Workshop”: Sailor’s Valentines / Keepsake Boxes

Join Us to Make Sailors’ Valentines / Keepsake Boxes. Participants will have a variety of materials to work with, including shells; to decorate square or rectangular wooden boxes in the tradition of old fashioned Sailors Valentines with a modern twist. Boxes can be used to store your favorite keepsakes, jewelry, watches; or, even everyday items such as remote controls, batteries and devices. Come have fun with us and create a box with your own personal style. Participants are asked to contribute $3 towards the cost of materials. All materials are included in the $3 fee. Beat the Winter Blues with HYGEE (pronounced: Hoo-Ga) Workshop

Come and learn about a fundamental quality of Danish Culture: HYGEE!  Hygge means creating a sanctuary of coziness, happiness, warmth and comfort for yourself. In the midst of the cold season; join us at the COA, as we host Peggy Wilbur from Broad Reach Hospice; who will talk about ways to find positivity in the cold, short days of this season. FREE “Artful Aging” Art Show Presentation

The COA and the Artful Aging Art Class Participants cordially invite you to a showing of their works of art. Featuring an afternoon of sharing their Artfully Aging Art Journals, conversations, and social gathering. This show is the culmination of the participants’ experiences in a 4-week series of classes led by local artist, Gail Tilton. The Artful Aging Art Classes were held at the COA and sponsored by the Friends of the Council on Aging. Consider Joining Us for Luncheon Beforehand, at 12pm.  On the Menu is: Cod Picatta over Pasta, Mixed Green Salad with a Balsamic Vinaigrette, and Bananas Foster for dessert. Reservations for either the Presentation or the Luncheon, or both, are required. Transportation is available. Tickets for Luncheon are $7. The Art Show is FREE.

Wednesday, February 27th, 10:00am

DAYTRIP DESTINATION: Scargo Pottery Studio Tour and Gallery, Followed by Luncheon

at The Marshside Restaurant.

We will travel to Scargo Pottery Studio and Gallery in Dennis. The studio creates and displays functional pottery for everyday use. They also create clay sculptures, wall tiles, bird baths, and castles. Their works feature stunning glazes developed and passed along over generations.  Founded in 1952 by renowned potter Harry Holl.  Scargo Pottery is currently owned and operated by potters Tina Holl, Kim Holl, and Meden Parker. Followed by the Tour, we will have lunch at the nearby Marshside Restaurant, which offers a variety of delicious luncheon menu items and specials and overlooks fabulous scenic marsh lands. The bus departs the COA at 10:00 am.  Admission to the Scargo Pottery Tour is FREE. Transportation is FREE. Lunch is at the cost of the diner. Reservations are required.
