Two Worcester Poly Students Return from Intensive Research Projects

WORCESTER, MA (02/06/2019)-- The following local residents were among students from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) who recently completed intense, hands-on research projects.

Callie Schadt of Brewster, Mass., a member of the class of 2020 majoring in mechanical engineering, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in Cape Town, South Africa. The project was titled Exploring the Serious Games Industry in Cape Town. In their project summary, the students wrote, "Informed by interviews with game developers and their business clients, scholars, and attendance at game conferences, we developed four case studies to explore the value proposition of serious games for industry in South Africa."

Samuel Joy of Sandwich, Mass., a member of the class of 2020 majoring in aerospace engineering, was a member of a student team that completed a project through the WPI project center in Venice. The project was titled PreserVenice Launch: A Crowdfunding Solution to Preserving Venetian Heritage. In their project summary, the students wrote, "We contributed to the creation of PreserVenice, a crowdfunded association dedicated to preserving Venetian heritage."

At WPI, all undergraduates are required to complete a research-driven, professional-level project that applies science and technology to addresses an important societal need or issue. About two-thirds of students complete a project at one of the university's 50-plus off-campus project centers, which are located around the world. A signature element of the innovative undergraduate experience at WPI, the project-based curriculum offers students the opportunity to apply their scientific and technical knowledge to develop thoughtful solutions to real problems that affect the quality of people's lives-and make a difference before they graduate.
