A number of Harwich Elementary School students were recently honored by the Harwich Garden Club, the National Garden Club, and the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts for their winning submissions in a statewide poetry contest.

Each year, the National Garden Club holds a themed poetry contest to excite and encourage young people to express and explore their creative thoughts through different types of poetry. The 2018-2019 theme was "Pop Goes the Seed."

Four Harwich Elementary School students were honored in this year’s competition. Julia Rodrigues was named the Kindergarten First Place State Winner of the poetry contest for her poem titled “Bees.” Sarah De Souza was named the Kindergarten Second Place State Winner for her poem, “Queen Bees.” In addition, Julia Zacharias and Lamis Kefel received Certificates of Appreciation for their participation in the competition.

The student work was submitted under the guidance of teacher Beth Connors, and the awards were bestowed by Harwich Garden Club member Donna Coveney.

As the statewide First Place winner, Julia Rodrigues’ poem has been forwarded to the New England Regional division for further judging.
