Letter Concerning Shark Safety

from County Commissioner Ron Beaty

Editor:

Speaking only as one individual Barnstable County Commissioner, I want to express my serious concern about an issue that is not being appropriately addressed by Cape Cod communities, our legislative delegation, or the feds.

On Cape Cod this summer, if a person is again devoured or maimed by a great white shark at a public beach, it will cause an immediate and steady downward spiral of the tourism economy, thus killing our communities as well.

Public safety plans and contingencies must be established, or else again saying “I told you so” will be the only satisfaction occurring as a result of another tragic event, aside from satisfaction felt by a man-eating shark swimming the ocean with a belly full of human flesh.
