BOSTON – State Representative Will Crocker, R-Centerville, secured funding for several important local initiatives, including funding for the Barnstable Police Department and Barnstable Youth Commission.
Representative Crocker was able to secure $25,000 in much needed funding for the Annual Youth Summit held in the town of Barnstable. This free to attend program is open to all seventh-grade students and is hosted by students for students. The program works to equip our youth with the information needed to resist substance abuse, as well as address any other issues relevant to our community. “I am so pleased to have been able to obtain the funding for the continuation of the Barnstable Youth Summit,” stated Representative Crocker. “This annual event is critical for local seventh graders to learn valuable information about social services available to them, specifically opiate addiction services. I truly believe this program has made a real difference in the lives of the students involved.” The funding will allow the summit to be held as planned in 2020 as the Barnstable Youth Commission continues to look for a permanent source of funding for future Youth Summits.
Additionally, Representative Crocker advocated and secured $20,400 worth of funding for the continuation of the Community Service Officer Program in Barnstable. “The Community Service Officers are truly the eyes and ears of the police department in and around Main Street in Hyannis,” said Representative Crocker. “Their presence has made a huge difference in the character and security of downtown Hyannis for our businesses, residents, and of course, our visitors. I am thrilled to see the funding for this important program was included in the House budget!” The funding will allow for the Barnstable Police Department to effectively address the needs and concerns of the general population in high-trafficked areas and will be especially helpful during the highly populated summer months.
The House is still participating in their budget deliberations but will likely wrap up on the evening of April 25th, 2019. From there, the budget will move to the Senate, which is expected to release its own spending proposal on May 8th.
