As you may or may not know, Cape Cod lost one its finest last winter unexpectedly when our good friend P.J. O'Connell fell to a heart attack in March. P.J. was a fine singer, a terrific, incisive songwriter, and a lovely, caring, funny, generous man whose fine catalog of songs (5 or so albums-worth!) somehow never got the recognition it deserved, which made his sudden departure that much harder to take. He was only 62, but he was really good not only at making friends, but at furnishing the world at large, friends and strangers alike, with a couple of the things he valued most: music and empathy.
Folks out here loved Pat, and now it looks like all systems are go for a proper P.J. O'Connell tribute on Sunday, June 16, at the Wellfleet Beachcomber, from 4 to 8pm. It'll be a benefit for WOMR, with a bunch of his friends and colleagues playing a lot of his songs, and there's a good chance fun could be had; we thought it might be a nice way to honor the old boy!
Here's the bill so far: Bruce Maclean, Sarah Swain & the Oh Boys, the Catbirds, Ed O'Connell, the Flakes, the Listeners, the Ticks, the Incredible Casuals (making their first appearance in many years, with longtime cohort Steve Wood on guitar), Klem Klimek, Jay Cournoyer, and maybe even the Mayocks...
Patstock? Well, we've got to call it something, don't we?
