A Celebration in Honor of the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 & First Man on the Moon

July 15th through 19th at Museum of Natural History

BREWSTER, MA — The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster presents a week of outstanding programs to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 spaceflight and the first man to walk on the moon: Monday July 15 through Friday July 19, 2019.

Fifty years ago on July 20, 1969 people from all over the world; every country, every race, every religion, every age group, watched together with bated breath as astronaut Commander Neil Armstrong piloted  the Lunar Module “Eagle” to a successful landing in what is called The Sea of Tranquility, narrowly missing one of the biggest craters on the moon. “The Eagle has landed”, he reported back to NASA. Then moments later, Armstrong descended the Eagle declaring to the entire world, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

In the spirit and celebration of this amazing achievement in technology, human bravery and determination to explore our solar system, the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is displaying a new Apollo 11 exhibit throughout the year that includes a small sample of moon dust brought back from the Apollo 11 mission. This rare sample was generously donated to the Museum by Paul B. Hamilton, one of the scientists who performed experiments on lunar soil brought back to Earth! The display is presented in memory of long time CCMNH astronomy volunteer, Jarvis Hunt, Jr.
