Fatal Crash in Harwich Overnight

Harwich, MA - A dangerous scene unfolded just after midnight when rescuers arrived at the scene of a one-car crash at Route 39 and Chatham Road.  

A vehicle had crashed into a utility pole and then into a tree.  Live wires were down on the mangled vehicle and preventing rescuers from approaching.  Once the power was cut, rescuers found the driver to be deceased.

Harwich Police closed Route 39 between Lovers Lane and Tody Bole while they worked the scene.  Power was out in the area.

At 7 a.m. the Chatham Police reported that their regular phone lines had been affected by the crash, issuing the statement below:

"Due to a major motor vehicle accident in Harwich which damaged the phone lines the phones at the Chatham Police Department are not receiving incoming calls on our regular phone numbers. Our emergency 911 phone are working and we are able to receive those emergency calls. If you need to reach the police department for non-emergency reason please call the Harwich Police at 508-430-7541 and they will relay the information to us. Verizon is currently working on the repairs and will get us back in service as soon as possible."

Police have not issued any further statements concerning the crash or the deceased driver.  The police investigation continues.
