Bourne Elementary Schools May Cancel Wednesday

Classes Called, Conditionally

A notification I got from Bourne Public Schools:

"This message is primarily for elementary school parents and caregivers.

In the event that there is a delayed start to the school day tomorrow, January 29, 2014 the half-day morning session for elementary school students will be canceled. Elementary teacher conferences will be held as scheduled.

Again, in the event that there is a delayed start to the school day at Bourne High School and Bourne Middle School, I am informing you that the elementary half-day morning session for students will be canceled but teacher conferences will be held as scheduled in the afternoon.

Note that there is no kindergarten or PM preschool tomorrow, January 29, 2014.

I will work with the school committee to make up lost instructional time in the event that this scenario occurs.

We're not getting a lot of snow. Accuweather says 2.33", WBZ says 1-4", WCVB says 3"-4", and WHDH says 2'-5". There is a large storm that will pass to our SE overnight. If it came any closer, we'd be up to our knees in snow, but it should just graze us.

The tricky part is the timing. Snow will start after midnight, and could still be falling heavily when the little cupcakes are out at their little bus stops. Many schools on Cape Cod are expected to delay opening. Such a delay would mean a (half) day off for the Bourne Elementary School kids.

I know your boss may not like it much if you call up at 7 PM and say, "I may or may not be in tomorrow." That's beyond my ability to control.

Oh, and to all the high school kids.... life is full of little gambles, and the educated gambler is generally the one with the fat bank. You can put off studying if you wish, but know that the B has already called off school a few times, and will avoid doing so again unless things get very dangerous. If you have a test tomorrow or a lot of homework tonight, I'd suggest that you do the right thing. You'll enjoy the snow day more if you have already done the heavy lifting.

If you need a laugh, some of my Georgia friends on Facebook are having 6-8 hour commutes home from this storm. Never mix snow with no plows, no sand, and a snow-virgin population who watch NASCAR extensively. Today only, the Alabama Slammer is a car crash on ice.
