Barack Obama getting the 411 in Chilmark last year, courtesy of whitehouse.gov....
US President Barack Obama is an Illinois guy, and he spends most of his time in Washington and the surrounding golf courses. However, like most pols, he has several places he calls home, and Martha's Vineyard is making her case to be ranked #3... depending on where you rank Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Leningrad, and so forth.
The Barry Bunch are due to be on the Vineyard from August 9th to the 23th.
The big question is centered on which house Barry will turn into the August White House. He used Blue Heron Farm for three years, and took a smaller one ("smaller" = "5000 sq. feet) last summer. However, the 10 acre Snail Road residence he used last summer was too close to the road, and the Secret Service precautions upset the locals.
My sources (Ed Lambert) say that they have rented a place in Chilmark, on North Road. North Road runs about halfway up the west end of the island. We are also hearing that he may be interested in renting the summer property of Duxbury philanthropist Stephen Bowden, a 4500 sq. foot estate known as "Blue Star Hall." We'll dig up the real house for you in a few hours/days.
Barry loves the Vineyard, and- other than around South Road- Martha loves Barry. He has been coming here for years, and Martha's Vineyard is indeed the home of the Summer White House. Barryspotters tell me that you want to hang around the Bunch Of Grapes bookstore on the 10th, as Barry usually pops in there for some Beach Bookage. It wouldn't hurt for a Barryspotter to book a few tee times at Farm Neck Golf Club at Oak Bluffs, as POTUS is a man of the links.
Malia and Sasha are 15 and 12 respectively, and I'm not sure if they are tagging along on the trip. They've done a few summers here, although they have missed some island time because of various commitments.
Since Barry is coming to town, we may as well do the annual ritual of pointing out how often he vacations when compared with other POTUS people. I hope you apreciate this, because A) there was a big fight online about this from 2009-2013, and B) Barry vacations a lot. Therefore, it is difficult to find current, up-to-date figures.
Politifact has Barry at 92 days of vacation as of August of last year. He also golfs a lot, which counts as a work day if he pushes some papers in the morning. All things considered, how does he stack up against the other Presidents?
George Bush II did an amazing amount of damage to America for a guy who took off about a third (1020 days total, in 8 years) of his Presidency, and actually was on vacation longer than the combined total Presidencies of JFK and William Henry Harrison. Bill Clinton, who, granted, seemed to have more fun in the Oval Office than most Presidents and probably counted a 19 hour day of work as a vacation if Hillary was away, hardly vacationed at all.
Reagan, who was pretty old and who actually took a bullet, banged out 335 days of vacation. His VP, Bush I, did 180 days in 3 years. Eisenhower, who won WWII and then jumped into the Presidency, tallied up 456 days in 2 terms. He was also a golfer to an extent that dwarfs Barry. LBJ did 484 days of vacation. FDR (who had polio, served 12 years, and died in office) did 958 days.
Bush II's 5 week vacation in 2005 was the longest modern Presidential holiday, although James Madison took off July, August, September and part of October after the War of 1812.
Jimmy Carter, who was absolutely ineffective and saw the GOP rule the Oval Office for 12 years after he finished, worked his butt off and took only 79 vacation days.
To be fair to Bush II, his vacations were taken at his own ranch, saving the taxpayer both rental fees and some Secret Service planning. To be fair to America, Bush II was no cowboy, and only owned the ranch to take advantage of Texas' tax breaks. The elder Bush, who prefers the Maine coast, used to list his residence as the "Hotel Derek, in Houston" before they invented the Internet.
So, Barry is entitled to some Vineyard time. We'll try to have the place ready for him when he shows.
The Bourne angle? Simple. When Barry does his vacations, he lands at the Otis Air National Guard Base. That means he flies over Bourne.
If you see Air Force One flying around on August 9th (if Barry and Michelle are on different planes, Barry has the pilot fly Air Force One over the beach at about 50 feet of altitude so he and the SS can do some bikini watching- this is referred to among the Secret Service as a "stimulus package"- and he bangs moons out the window at heavily Republican beaches), look up and wave.
