Next week there will be plenty of activity at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center with after school and weekend activities, skating lessons and more, culminating in the Festival of Museums on Saturday, April 28th! The newly renovated Barnstable Skate Park is now open Tuesday-Friday 3-8 PM and weekends 12-8PM (closed Monday and rainy days) and we are excited about the Annual BSP Comp & Celebration scheduled for Saturday, May 12th starting at Noon! Spring has sprung at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center! Now that the winter sports teams have finished their seasons, we have a few moments to take a breath and do some spring cleaning! For the first time in the nine years the building has been open, our hardworking team of maintenance professionals are planning to shut down the entire facility from April 29th - May 13th with work to include, but not be limited to, locker rooms, both ice rinks and the main lobby. Starting on May 7th, the Main Lobby will reopen to accommodate Beach Parking Permit sales which will begin that day and continue throughout the summer Monday - Saturday 9AM-4PM; Sunday & Holidays 9AM-12PM. An Open House is planned for Friday, May 18th from 6-8PM when we will offer free admission for Public Skating and Open Gym/Game Room. The Scudder Family Cafe operated by the Casual Gourmet will be open for business as well as the new Barnstable Youth Hockey Pro Shop. All are welcome to come and enjoy the results of our rejuvenation project!

Tomorrow, we look forward to seeing our HYCC Skating School participants show off the skills they have improved upon throughout the year. The theme for the annual skating show is "Peace, Love, Dance on Ice" and will include skaters of all ages and abilities performing to music set to the theme; all are sure to enjoy this beloved event. Admission is free but donations are gratefully accepted and help to cover the cost of props and costumes. There is space available in all of the classes for the spring session of HYCC Skating School. On Tuesday, March 27th, the Barnstable Youth Commission‘s 2nd Annual Youth Job Fair was a big success drawing 136 students from Plymouth to Eastham (and one student from Lawrence!). Young people between the ages of 14-18 were encouraged to stop by and visit with employers who were ready to hire eager young workers. Warren Rutherford from the Executive Suite was on hand to help them prepare to ask questions about how to get a work permit, practice interviewing and getting familiar with the process of getting their first job. The Y Achievers program (Molly Sproul, Lt. Jean Challies and Tatiana) added a new component in helping the applicants learn the proper way to write thank you notes for their interviews. The Barnstable High School Girls Hockey team continues their outstanding season this week with Senior Night slated to take place on Valentine's Day, Wednesday, February 14th. The puck drops at 5:10 PM as they take on Latin Academy in their last home game of the regular season. Come cheer them on and wish them well in the post-season! Starting Friday and throughout school vacation week, Skate For Love - for every non-perishable food item you bring in to help our local food pantries, you will receive a chance to win a year of free ice skating! Join us at the HYCC during public skating sessions over school vacation week (February 16th through February 24th) and drop off a non-perishable food item at the Skate Rental Room for your chance to win FREE PUBLIC SKATING FOR A YEAR!!! Donations will be accepted at the HYCC Skate Rental when the building is open throughout the week, you do not have to attend a public skating session to be a part of this great event. All items collected will be distributed to local food pantries on Cape Cod. We will draw a winning ticket on Friday, February 24th right after the public skating session ends at 4:00PM. The Hyannis Youth & Community Center offers annual memberships that are just $20 for Barnstable residents ($40 for non-residents). Members have acccess to the indoor walking track, scheduled open gym and game room times as well as three complimentary passes for skating and open gym so you can bring a friend to try it out! The cost for ice skating activities is separate, and also affordable. Admission for Adults is $7, Students $5 and Seniors $2. Skate rentals are just $5 and skate sharpening is available for $6/pair. The Barnstable Recreation Division is pleased to offer this great field trip to see the UCONN Huskies Women's Basketball team play Temple on Sunday, February 18, 2018. The cost will be $50.00/person (includes coach bus & ticket). This is a great opportunity to see former Barnstable Recreation basketball participant, MOLLY BENT, perform during her Sophomore year. It will also be great to see BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME COACH, GENO AURIEMMA. His UCONN teams have won 11 National Championships and have had six perfect seasons. He has also led Team USA to gold medals in 2012 and 2016. Barnstable Recreation will provide chaperones for 4th-7th Grade recreation basketball participants if an adult cannot attend the game. Kindergarten-3rd Grade basketball participants and the general public MUST be accompanied by an adult. You are welcome to pack snacks and drinks for the bus ride. Please bring money for lunch, snacks, and/or souvenirs available for puchase at the game. We will meet at the HYCC, 141 Bassett Lane, Hyannis at 10:00AM. Bus will depart at 10:30AM. Game will start at 2:00PM. Bus will return to the HYCC at approximately 7:30PM. SPACE IS LIMITED so don't hesitate to sign up! We expect this trip to be SOLD OUT!
