The Kennedy Rink will be back on line next week after some extensive work on the refrigeration plant to get the ice making system optimally efficient in time for the busy summer season! There are a number of hockey clinics and camps for all ages and a high school league that begins the last week of June, running through mid-August. With lots of public skating and open gym times scheduled each day, there is sure to be something for everyone in the whole family to enjoy! Although fees for public skating and skate rentals are separate from the affordable HYCC Membership program, did you know when you sign up for your annual membership, you will receive coupons good for free admission to two public skating sessions and one that is good for a guest pass or public skating session? SAVE THE DATES! On Friday night, June 15, 2018 the Annual Father / Daughter Dance will take place in the Gymnasium from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. This year's luau theme is sure to be a lot of fun! Children and their adult companion can purchase their tickets at the door. The fee is $20/couple and $5 for each additional child. All children will receive a lei necklace, refreshments, games with prizes and dancing to music with a live deejay. On Saturday, June 16, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, the annual Bike Rodeo will take place in the parking lot outside the Hyannis Youth & Community Center. There is no rain date so the event will be cancelled should there be inclement weather (annoucnements will be made on the HYCC Facebook page and web site. Along with the beloved obstacle course, there will be bicycle safety inspections thanks to Sea Sports and appearances by members of the Barnstable Police and Hyannis Fire Departments with fun games with prizes from local businesses and more! Admission is free! At the same time that day, inside the Hyannis Youth & Community Center a kickoff event for the "Summer Eats" free meals program for youths age 1-18 will take place (rain or shine). The HYCC and Barnstable Recreation Division, in conjunction with St. Mary's Church, the YMCA of Cape Cod, the Dennis-Yarmouth School District and the Church of the Holy Spirit will be on hand with information about all of their local free "Summer Eats" Food Program locations as well as giving out free lunches and family friendly activities. A sure sign that summer is almost here: beach parking permits ("beach stickers") are on sale in the Main Lobby at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center! Permits are required year-round for each vehicle that parks at both resident and public municipal beach lots. The beaches will be fully staffed beginning June 23, 2018.
REMINDER: the HYCC will be closed on Monday, May 28th in recognition of the Memorial Day Holiday, but beach stickers will be available for sale from 9:00 AM to Noon in the Main Lobby. Summer program registration is available for all residents and non-residents. There are a few programs that are now full but there are so many more to choose from! There are still some spots available for kids in grades 1-5 at the Barnstable High School site (with free breakfast and lunch) and at the Barnstable United Elementary School site for the 2018 Summer Leisure Program which runs July 2– August 17 Monday - Friday from 8:30AM to 4:30PM. The program fee is only $850 for Barnstable Residents and kids enjoy weekly field trips and supervised fun with their peers! Other programs include swim lessons, sailing, science, youth police academy, baking, street hockey, yoga, skating lessons, gymnastics, dance and more! For those with returning school-age children, please be sure and review your household account and verify the information is correct, particularly with regard to your children's grade in school as this often affects your ability to register the children in age appropriate programs. The popular High School Summer Sports Leagues at the HYCC are again shaping into form with some exciting teams that will represent every corner of the Cape and beyond! Athletes will compete in boys and girls basketball and hockey leagues as well girls volleyball in various divisions broken down into age groups and skill levels. Admission to the games is free and spectators are always welcome! Play-offs and Championship games at the end of the summer are always exciting!
There are plenty of activities with drop-in family fun that everyone can enjoy, both indoors and out! At the HYCC, there are public skating sessions nearly every day, along with specialized times for figure skaters and hockey players to practice their skills. Open gym time and a three-lane walking track, a game room and computer lab can be accessed with an annual HYCC Membership or a $5 Day Pass, available from any staff member. Outside, there is a playground, the Barnstable Skate Park, which is open and staffed Tuesday-Sunday (closed Mondays and rainy days), as well as basketball courts next to the new "Little Fenway" baseball complex. On Monday, the HYCC will re-open after some extensive maintenance work! The schedule for the week of public activities can be found here! The Youth Center, Gymnasium and Walking Track will be open but pickleball will not meet on Monday and Friday. Public skating and Walk-On Freestyle skating time will take place in the Butler Rink but there is no hockey stick practice scheduled until Sunday, May 20th. Come by on Friday, May 18th from 6-8 PM for Open House! There will be free admission for public skating and memberships/day pass requirements for entry into the youth center, including the gymnasium, game room and walking track will be waived! Staff will be on hand to give tours of the entire facility. Check out the newly finished floors in the lobby, youth center, locker rooms and concourse areas as well as the Gymnasium and Walking Track! Work on the Kennedy Rink is still in progress and you’ll be able to peek through the windows to see what’s under the ice!
This Saturday, May 12th at Noon! The Barnstable Recreation Division presents its annual Skate Park Competition outside the Hyannis Youth & Community Center on 141 Bassett Lane, Hyannis. Entry Fee is just $5 and prizes will be awarded to each age group in skateboard, bmx and scooter categories. Through the generosity and support of local business owner Lou Nickinello, new ramps and rails were added to the Park and the Town of Barnstable's Department of Public Works repaired and painted the California-style bowls and other areas where it was needed. There will be a short ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon to acknowledge all of the staff and community members that helped with the repairs and updated equipment, followed immediately by the competition and a cookout with support from Stop 'n Shop, Cape Cod Potato Chips and Coca Cola Bottling Company of Cape Cod.
The Skate Park is operated and staffed by the Town of Barnstable's Recreation Division of the Community Services Department. It is open seasonally from April through November Tuesday-Sunday (Closed on Mondays and during inclement weather). Hours vary and are extended during school vacations. Admission is free and helmets are required. Helmets and other protective gear are available for rent at the Skate Shack located in the park. Spring has sprung at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center! Now that the winter sports teams have finished their seasons, we have a few moments to take a breath and do some spring cleaning! For the first time in the nine years the building has been open, our hardworking team of maintenance professionals are planning to shut down the entire facility from April 29th - May 13th with work to include, but not be limited to, locker rooms, both ice rinks and the main lobby. Starting on May 7th, the Main Lobby will reopen to accommodate Beach Parking Permit sales which will begin that day and continue throughout the summer Monday - Saturday 9AM-4PM; Sunday & Holidays 9AM-12PM. An Open House is planned for Friday, May 18th from 6-8PM when we will offer free admission for Public Skating and Open Gym/Game Room. The Scudder Family Cafe operated by the Casual Gourmet will be open for business as well as the new Barnstable Youth Hockey Pro Shop. All are welcome to come and enjoy the results of our rejuvenation project!

On Tuesday, March 27th, the Barnstable Youth Commission‘s 2nd Annual Youth Job Fair was a big success drawing 136 students from Plymouth to Eastham (and one student from Lawrence!). Young people between the ages of 14-18 were encouraged to stop by and visit with employers who were ready to hire eager young workers. Warren Rutherford from the Executive Suite was on hand to help them prepare to ask questions about how to get a work permit, practice interviewing and getting familiar with the process of getting their first job. The Y Achievers program (Molly Sproul, Lt. Jean Challies and Tatiana) added a new component in helping the applicants learn the proper way to write thank you notes for their interviews.
