Our toddler programs and high school practices are cancelled for today, but we are open early! Come in to the youth center and have some fun on your snow day! Annual memberships are just $20 for Barnstable residents, $40 for non-residents and $5 for a day pass! PUBLIC SKATE IS $7 Adults / $5 Students / $2 Seniors. Rentals are available for $5!

NATIONS CUP THEATRE ON ICE -- APRIL 6-8 / US FIGURE SKATING NATIONAL THEATRE ON ICE APRIL 8-10

The Hyannis Youth & Community Center is the hub of the upcoming International Nations Cup Theatre on Ice event which is happening April 6-8 immediately followed by the US National Theatre On Ice Championship on April 9-10.  Tony Kent Arena will participate as a practice rink and dozens of area businesses are offering support for the heavy traffic volume of participants and spectators from all over the world who are expected to visit during the events.

Nations Cup: What is it?

Hosted by the Hyannis Youth & Community Center thanks to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and the Yarmouth Ice Club.  This artistically choreographed competition uses colorful costumes and clever ice props to portray the beautiful themese and teamwork that represents the relatively new sport of Theatre On Ice (or "Ballet on Ice" as it is known in Europe).  The second installment of the US Figure Skating sanctioned Nations Cup, featuring 30 highly competitive international teams from as far away as France, Spain, Russia, Australia and the Ukraine with 12 teams representing the United States, four of them representing Massachusetts including Boston, Acton, Hingham and Uxbridge.  The event is taking place April 6-8 for the first time on US soil. The competition, in its second year, was held in France last year.  Singles and paired skaters ranging in age from 8 years old to adults are set to compete.  An Opening Ceremony sponsored by HyLine Cruises presenting competitors from each country as well as a closing ceremony awarding medals to the top finishers.

US NATIONAL THEATER ON ICE CHAMPIONSHIP

Following the Nations Cup is the US National Theater on Ice Championship from April 9-10.  Teams from across the United States will be competing in the event that is being hosted by the Yarmouth Ice Club.  Ten teams will represent clubs in Massachusetts including Boston, Acton, Hingham and Uxbridge as well as local Cape Cod teams from Barnstable, Bourne and Yarmouth. 

TICKETS

  • Tickets are $45.00 for a competition pass that covers all competition and practices or $15 per day in advance. After April 1, the prices increase to $60/$20. A discount of 10% for Senior Citizens and Students as well as AAA members is available.
  • Tickets are on sale now THROUGH MAIL ORDER ONLY AND AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR DURING THE EVENT. HYANNIS YOUTH & COMMUNITY CENTER

The Town of Barnstable's Hyannis Youth and Community Center ("HYCC") is situated in the heart of Cape Cod's commercial hub surrounded by hotels, restaurants, local attractions and more!The HYCC is a 105,000 sq. ft. full service community center equipped with two NHL-size rinks, youth center featuring arcade games and computer lab, Ardeo's Restaurant full-service concession as well as an NBA-size basketball court.

What does the HYCC offer?

  • Primarily servicing the youth of the Town of Barnstable, the HYCC is the home of the school district's athletic departments, after-school programs, hockey and figure skating competitive organizations and community groups, and the estimated 2,500 children whose families reside within a one-mile radius of the facility.

  • The building is a short stroll (two blocks) away from popular restaurants, shops and attractions on Main Street.
  • The Barnstable Municipal Airport, Hyannis Transportation Center and ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are also nearby.

  •  The Nations Cup will take place April 6-8; with the 2011 US Nationals beginning April 8-10 in the town of Barnstable at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center thanks to the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and the Yarmouth Ice Club.

The Canadian Women's Hockey League is coming to the Hyannis Youth & Community Center on Saturday, February 5 and the Boston Blades will face-off against Toronto at 2:30PM! Boston Blades head coach is Erin Hamlin, formerly Associate Head Coach at UNH and a US national team goalie.   Commemorative tickets are available for sale in advance at the HYCC Box Office for $5 (Adults) and $3 (Students and Seniors).  Youth hockey groups are encouraged to bring their teams to see members of the gold and silver medal 2010 Winter Olympic teams in this high powered, fast paced game!

BARNSTABLE REC UPDATE! January 7, 2011

 WELCOME TO OUR BLOG!

As you may know, the Hyannis Youth & Community Center is owned by the Town of Barnstable and operated by the Recreation Division.  Here is an update of the Recreation Division programs, activities and events!

GREAT NEWS! Our request to drop the non-resident fee for our US Figure Skating Learn-to-Skate programs was approved! Instead of paying double, you need only pay a $10 surcharge! 8 weeks for just $110! Look for our Spring Brochure in February. Session III begins in early May at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center!

Our annual mailing of applications for Parking Permits (Beach Stickers) are going out this week to all those who purchased a permit last year. This is a convenient way for residents to obtain their permits and we encourage all to fill out the beach survey and mail it back with your application and payment at your earliest convenience.

ZUMBA (Ages 14+) Sundays Jan 2-Feb 20 at the HYCC Gym 10-11am. Start the New Year off right with an upbeat fitness class! Learn steps to fun Latin Dances with great music. Come learn some new moves and burn 500-1000 calories per class! Certified Zumba Instructor: Caryl Steward

FEBRUARY SCHOOL VACATION WEEK PROGRAM:  Tue-Fri, Feb 22-25 from 8:30am-4pm.  Location TBD.  For Kids in grades 1-5: Participants will go on local field trips, do some cooking, arts and crafts, games and much more. Children should bring a lunch and drinks each day. Wear clothing that is weather appropriate for outside play.

LEARN TO BOX: Session II Ages 8-16 Learn to Box (Mondays Feb 28 - Apr 25 at HYCC 6:30-7:30pm)  this eight week class is designed to teach the fundamentals of boxing in a safe and fun environment. This is a non-contact instructional class meant to help boost children's self confidence and stamina. Taught in collaboration with the UK Sports Development and Cape Cod Boxing Club.

The BHS girls hockey team's 6th annual skate night invites young girls ages 5-14 to come and have some fun, whether they know how to skate or not! Along with free skating and free rentals, there will be hot chocolate and also goody bags for the first 300 participants. Doors open at 6pm and skating is from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

The International Junior Hockey League Showcase, featuring our very own 2010 IJHL Champions Cape Cod Cubs, will take place here at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center on Martin Luther King weekend!  SAT APR 2 - Barnstable Recreation Learn-to-Skate Showcase

They have worked on their skills and routines all year long and now is the moment for participants in our US Figure Skating Learn-to-Skate program to show how their hard work and dedication has paid off! Theme for this year's show is "A Night of Sparkling Stars" and about 250 kids are expected to participate.

We are so excited to work with the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce and Yarmouth Ice Club to host the US Figure Skating Nations Cup and the 4th Theatre on Ice Nationals!  The deadline for teams to enter the competition is January 10. With more than 25 teams expected to compete from as far away as Spain, France, Russia, Switzerland and Australia, just to name a few! Immediately following the international competition, the national competition will take place with 30-50 teams expected to attend. Tickets are $45 for an event pass or $15 per day and may be purchased online. Mail order forms are available at the HYCC Front Desk. Tickets will also be available at the door throughout the competition.
