Marching on the Supreme Court

In the ten years since the State of Massachusetts accepted that two consenting adults should be able to legalize their committed relationship by marriage, the earth has not opened up, and the state has maintained the second lowest divorce rate in the country. Equal marriage did not destroy opposite sex marriages, and no one lined up to marry their household pets, barnyard animals, or, as Rush Limbaugh, the paragon of "traditional marriage" and a loud defender of it, recently said would happen, their household furniture.

The main reason for this is that, obviously, the people of Massachusetts are smart enough to know that animals and furniture are not consenting adults, nor can they sign the legal contracts of marriage.

We know it is a legal contract with the government because a couple must get a marriage license from city hall; the presiding clergy, if there is one, states that "by the power vested in me by the state of....."; the person presiding over the ceremony can be a Justice of the Peace, a judge, or even the captain of a ship; and the newly weds instantly get 1,138 civil benefits.

Some will say it is religious because "What God has joined, let no man break asunder" is in the Bible, but all the divorces that take place do so in a civil court with the case presented by a lawyer, who apparently is allowed to "break asunder".

By comparison, the states that speak loudest against marriage equality, quote the Bible in defense of "traditional marriage", and do whatever it takes to prevent equal treatment of its citizens have the highest divorce rates, and one even had a Senator accepting the idea that a boy should be taught how to do sex right by practicing on chickens (In Jesus's name?).

Those states that lead in divorce are:
Arizona, Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Nevada, Kentucky, Alaska, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

These states are big on the "defense of Marriage".

As far as divorced individuals strongly fighting to "defend" marriage, past and present, there are such people as Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, Newt Gingrich, Dick Armey, Senator Phil Gramm of Texas, Bill O'Reilly of Fox News, George Will, Rush Limbaugh (he and his current wife, Marta, have six marriages and four divorces between them), Senator Bob Barr of Georgia (Married three times, he had authored and pushed the “Defense of Marriage Act"), Senator John McCain of Arizona, Pete Session of Texas, Benny Hinn (Whoa! He's that religious guy that God speaks to all the time), Karl Rove, Mary Fallin (She is the governor of Oklahoma who was having an affair with her state trooper body guard while running for office on the Traditional Family Values platform, then got divorced and remarried), Joe Scarborough (the conservative talk show host), and Rudy Giuliani.

This is only a partial list of defenders of "traditional" (their form) of marriage.

Then we have Sara Palin who, although not divorced herself, seems to have a lot to say about what marriage is, people's families, and how children should be raised while having one unwed daughter not only being a mother, but having attempted a reality show to get pity from us, and a son, married less than two years, getting a divorce. Momma Bear didn't do too well raising the kids, yet she wants to tell us how to raise ours.

A careful look at the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) shows it should actually be called the Prevent Gay People From Getting Married Act (PGPFGMA) because other than covering just that, there are no provisions to deal with divorce or adultery which would seem to have a bigger influence on the dissolution of a marriage than a same sex married couple in another neighborhood or town.

There are also those who make the claim that as marriage is for procreation, same sex couples should not be allowed to marry as they cannot procreate. Sadly this argument would prevent any couple beyond child bearing age from getting married as well as anyone who is infertile or impotent.

It was also brings into question whether or not certain defenders of the pro-ceative defense of marriage lied about their condition in order to enter a sham marriage. Newt Gingrich, married three time only had children by the first wife; Rush Limbaugh, married four times, has no children from any marriage; and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court being married for 16 years without issue and had to adopt kids come to mind.

These are all fine employers of the magicians tool of misdirection.

And then there is poor Clarence Thomas who, as he has to listen as people constantly claim that marriage should not be "redefined", knows that unless the Court had changed the rules of marriage not that long ago, his marriage to his wife would be illegal.

The thing is, yes, there are liberals who are divorced, and I am sure people could supply lists of them. However, the difference is that those in the above list talk loudly about "traditional" marriage, and loudly and freely judge others, sometimes pandering to the lowest common denominator in people to do so. They present those in favor of marriage equality as the worst people ever who have no respect for marriage, or even the United States. Yet they are the ones with a record of violating the very things they claim to defend.

Now I know there will be those who, grasping for anything to attempt to make a point, will ask about Clinton. But, in the 15 years since the Lewinski business became public, Bill and Hillary came to some arrangment that preserved their marriage while some of the people that went after him have since been divorced, some having the affairs that led to the divorce the whole time they were vociferously condemning Clinton for his infidelity. welcomes thoughtful comments and the varied opinions of our readers.
