July '17 Brews, Vines & Spirits Report & a Cannonball Cocktail

First up is Cape Cod Beer, find them on the web at http://capecodbeer.com/ or facebook at www.facebook.com/CapeCodBeer/, they are even on Twitter, Instagram and yes You Tube. To see what beers are in season go to the home page and go to the bottom and on the right hand side there is a 2017 beer release calendar. Very handy to know what is in and what is not. Also for you locals, know when off season seasonal beers are coming out and when, helps you plan for all those holiday plans. With that in mind, a highlight for this month some with the following word from the brewery itself:       On July 25th, Cape Cod Beer once again celebrates Christmas in July! This is a long-standing tradition at the brewery, our Brewmaster Todd preserves the last drops of our winter seasonal, Old Man Winter and barrel ages it to be enjoyed in the heat of summer. Each year the barrel varies, resulting in subtle changes to the beer’s flavor profile each summer. This year’s batch was aged in a barrel from Truro Vineyards + South Hollow Spirits that was used to age their Twenty Boat Amber Rum for 2.5 years.

Weighing in at around 8% ABV and made with over 2,000 pounds of malted barley this beer is packed with malty flavor. Twenty Boats Amber Rum has a complexity that is the result of a blended aging process, incorporating both Chardonnay and whiskey barrels for a spirit full with the aromas and flavors of vanilla, strong caramel nuttiness, and rich minerality. Twice distilled in small batches, Amber Rum is made from molasses and sugarcane juice, with a lingering finish that brings sweet notes of butterscotch, balanced with earthy tobacco.

Small business report: This week I would point out a new company, Red Dogs & Company. This is a Farm to Treat Grain Free Dog Treats Handcrafted Dog Supplies. First find them on their web site of reddogscompany.com of facebook page www.facebook.com/reddogscompany or Etsy: at Etsy.com/shop/reddogscom. Sometimes it is just best to put the description from their own words and it goes like this: Red Dogs & Company is a veteran owned small business from Cape Cod, MassachusettsOur Farm to Treat grain free dog treats are unique in that all of the vegetables that go into our treats are organically grown on our farm and by local farmers. All of the other ingredients are USDA certified organic. We hand make our treats in small batches and we do not use chemicals, preservatives, or artificial dyes or coloring. All of our treats are grain and meat free. We also feature handmade nautical themed collars and leashes made with American made materials along with all natural dog shampoo and dog toys! Ok now I will go one step further, I purchased a bag of their Cape Cod Cranberry Grain Free Treats for my 14 pound Pomeranian Boy. First thing when I opened the bag, they actually smelled good enough for me to eat. Second when I offered it to my boy he took one sniff and snatched that biscuit right out of my hand without another thought. We have found a new treat for him. And whats better is they are based right here in the mid-Cape area, not the Dennises and not Barnstable, but somewhere in between, hint hint. If you have a pooch pet, this is a company you can get behind. They are in 10 retail stores on and off the Cape, and at some of our local craft and artisan shows. Oh, and they have more than just treats, check them out and when you get a chance give them a try.
Welcome one, welcome all, yup I feel like a ring master or M.C. at a circus with all that is going on here at lighthouse. But don't get me wrong I am not complaining as I love to see all the folk coming through to see what makes this old girl tick and what keeps you running the that pink bunny. The parking lots have been full, the beach has been full and over the past couple days folks have been coming round to get special viewings of some of the towns fireworks displays going on. Being one of the hight points around here we have a unique vantage point and although not close you can still see many that went on over the last couple days. Anyway, If you are planning to come visit, you might want to think about a weekend as they are not quite as jam-packed as the weekends but we will be happy to see you whenever you can make it during our open hours of operations. Well, the weather continues to be a blessing and we hope you are enjoying your time here on Cape Cod, or looking forward to getting here. Have a great and wonderful anytime, everyday especially if you can do it right here on old Cape Cod. See you real soon at the old Lighthouse.
Here we go with another pirates life cocktail theme. You can't get to fall without thinking about cannonballs going off from or at a pirates ship. But drink one too many of this cocktail and your head will feel like a cannonball hit it. As I have said many times over I hate to use brand names, but when every cross-referenced recipe calls for this brand, well I guess I will break down and use it this time. Last word, please be a responsible drinker, and/or a responsible host, we love to enjoy our libations, but we also love your families and friends, so please if you've had, listen to those around you, and don't drive after drinking. Now on with the show:
      This week's recipe: Cannonball Cocktail
2      oz      Captain Morgan's Tattoo Orange Rum
      4      oz      Coca-Cola
Pour the Captain Morgan Tattoo into an old-fashioned glass filled with ice cubes. Top with coke with a slice of lime, and serve.
