Sandler at the Beach

This must be my week for the movies. Monday, my son, Daniel, who is in film school in Los Angeles, called me to say he was on a set in Echo Park. This is his second movie this year and although Daniel always tries to be cool, I could hear the excitement in his voice.

My wife and I went to see The Help which I thought was a reasonably good movie; but today Kelly Crosby, on her radio show, along with her guest-a black creative writing instructor (female) and a black Afro-Studies professor (male) tore the movie to pieces. I couldn't believe they were talking about the same movie I had seen.

The problem, according to them, is that the author of the book on which the movie is based, is a white woman. "How can a white woman understand the dynamics of racism in America?" one of them said.  Of course, that statement in itself is dynamically racist.

Later on, as I pulled into Craigville Beach, I came upon a movie crew; I parked in a hurry and rushed over to the camera setup with my own video camera. One of the crewmembers told me they were making an Adam Sandler movie. He plays a hot-tub salesman, a used hot-tub salesman.

Of course, Adam was not on location but I thought I had come upon a scoop so I called Walter Brooks of Walter said, "Where've you been? We've written three articles about this already."

"So, I guess it's not a scoop?" I muttered.

You see, Walter and I met on a movie set, met on the set of Chatham a few years ago. I consider that meeting to be fortuitous.

In any case, Walter is in Maine and he told me how he had driven by a house in the country that had pick-up trucks, kitchen appliances, etc., etc. in the front yard-all this plus a Confederate flag.

"What do you make of that?" he asked.

"Well, I guess they're waiting for Governor Perry to show up," I said.

My fondest memory of the day was of a young, beautiful blond standing by the Sandler setup while oozing out of her red bikini. A crewmember allowed as how she must be hoping to get discovered. My many years in Hollywood tell me that she will get discovered, indeed, and is probably getting discovered as I type.

God Bless one and all. D. Rojay
