Barnstable #1 In The State, And Other High School Scores

Red Raiders Defeat Everett In Battle Of Two Top Seeded Teams

This news site has, for a long time, trumpeted Cape Cod and the South Shore as the heart of the state's football prowess. You used to be able to make the argument that I did so because I'm a very biased Cape Cod sportswriter who sort of knows where his bread is buttered.... before yesterday!

#2 Barnstable defeated #1 Everett Friday night in a double overtime thriller, 13-7. The win most likely secures the #1 overall ranking in the state of Massachusetts (and quite possibly New England) for the Red Raiders, unless someone in Duxbury loosened up the purse strings and signed Ndamukong Suh or somebody.

Everett scored first, and held the lead for 3 quarters, Dylan "Phillip" Morris and Nick "Mister" Peabody hooked up for a touchdown to force a pair of overtimes. In the second overtime, the Morris/Peabody connection again hit the end zone, and someone whose name I should know but don't scored an interception to seal the win.

Barnstable should hold the #1 ranking for the rest of the year. Their only other dangerous game is against ranked Bridgewater-Raynham, and B-R has already been tuned up by new #2 Duxbury. If B-R can knock off the Red Raiders (and if Duxbury doesn't lose this season), that would put Duxbury atop the state.

So, let's all tip our caps to Barnstable, who are doing Cape Cod proud! Big ups to Coach Whidden, too!
