The Alliance Justifies its Existence One Last Time

First, a fact that I’ll use in a paragraph or two: This week, the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound launched a new anti-Cape Wind radio campaign across the Cape and Islands.

For two reasons, I blog much less frequently on Cape Wind than I used to:

a. It’s all been said before. There’s little need to repeat the old arguments over and over.

b. It’s over. At least the part that we, the public, can affect. Cape Wind has all of the government permits that it needs and it won the last important law suits against it last spring. In one, a landmark decision, the judge handed CW a landslide victory. In the other, the judge threw the case out saying: “There comes a point at which the right to litigate can become a vexatious abuse of the democratic process”.  All that remains are business steps that CW itself must achieve. These steps are immune to Alliance misinformation.

So one has to ask:

“What is the purpose of the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound’s new ad campaign?”

There are probably 2 purposes:

a. To raise funds. Lavish as they are, Bill Koch’s donations aren’t enough to keep the Alliance’s head above water.

b. To justify the Alliance’s existence. It’s to this purpose that I’ll turn my attention.

What’s a lobbying group to do when its cause is lost but it wishes to remain in existence? When its employees, like its President Audra Parker, wish to keep their jobs? Make believe that it’s winning the war, of course, and disseminate that misinformation via advertising. Let’s examine the last paragraph of the new radio advertisement:

"What you may also not see is that Cape Wind can be stopped. Did you know that after 13 years, this private developer still faces lawsuits and needs investors? Or that opposition is increasing? Or that Cape Wind can move to a better site? The truth is, their expensive power plant is far from a done deal. With your support, we can stop Cape Wind".

Faces lawsuits? Well that’s true if you count an appeal of the “vexatious abuse of the democratic process” case. With that kind of rejection, though, I wouldn’t want to bet on a different outcome the second time around,

Needs investors? True. But about 60% of the financing is in place and CW just received a federal loan guarantee. In other words, financing is coming together.

Opposition increasing? How pathetic. Other than Koch, about the only support that the Alliance has these days comes from the ever misguided Barnstable Town Council. And even that support is limited to the unwinnable appeal mentioned above. Why has the Alliance’s support plunged of late? Because it’s over!

Let’s cut to the chase:
