Kickin' for a cause--at drag kickball
Provincetown gets all dolled up for a good cause
by Maggie Kulbokas

Miss Richfield 1981 waves to the crowd after making it to first base.
Quite a crowd came out for yesterday's Drag Kickball Benefit at Motta Field in Provincetown. It was the Angry Beavers (no association with Nickelodeon) against the Provincetown Kickers in a benefit to raise funds for the town's Community Center. Although losing the game at 5-4, it was the Beavers who presented quite a colorful lineup featuring Miss Richfield 1981, Olive Another, Sharron Needles, Scarbie, Debbie the Downer and Cashetta, the drag magician, who did double time as witty MC and player (a remarkable look-alike...not). You don't see that kind of roster at Fenway!

Benefit MC, the lovely Cashetta.
A family-friendly event, the game pace was quick and the innuendo would fly easily over any child's head. In fact, many children attended, including several of the furry four-legged variety. Hopefully, the sponsors and the large turn-out made for a financially successfully event. At one point, the ever-imposing Lea Delaria was sent outside the fence to shake down non-paying spectators to the players chants of "we won't play until you pay!" Which proves again, it's not wise to mess with men in heels. Or Lea Delaria.
Lea, a comedian and talented recording artist, jazzed up the National Anthem and Kate Clinton's patented satirical wit made her a referee to be reckoned with. The event also featured a raffle of items and gift certificates donated by local businesses and the live auction of a kickball sporting the autographs of the participants and a few celebs who couldn't attend such as Margaret Cho and Madonna. Okay, not so sure about Madonna.

The Hat Sisters cheer on the Angry Beavers.
Adults are kicking up a renewed interest in this one time elementary school gym staple. The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA)considers themselves "the preeminent adult kickball organization and the world authority and governing body of kickball". Currently, there are divisions listed on their site for the Boston area. Kickball is a true community sport that can be played and enjoyed by people of varying athletic skill.
Adult kickball, sans hose and hairdos is held at Motta Field every Tuesday at 5:30pm.
