Cape Care Coalition Fall Quarterly Meeting to be held September 13
Fall quarterly meeting to be held on September 13th
The Cape Care Coalition, an initiative to create Cape Care, a regional, community-owned health care system for Cape Cod, will hold its Fall Quarterly Meeting on Saturday, September 13, 9:30am to noon at the Dennis Senior Center, 1045 Route 134, South Dennis (corner of Route 134 and Setucket Road, easily accessible from both the Mid-Cape and Rt 6A).
The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will focus on upcoming legislative efforts.
In November, Cape Codders in three of the six Cape legislative districts will be able to join others in various districts around the state to vote yes on health care as a human right. On the ballot in districts in the Upper, Mid and Outer Cape regions, the health care as a human right initiative is an opportunity for citizens to express their strong desire for change in the current health care system. The Cape Care Coalition is also working this fall to organize the community to work with their Cape legislators to support the necessary enabling legislation at the state level that will help make Cape Care a reality. Legislation will be introduced in late December for the 2009/2010 legislative session.
In 2006, citizens in eleven of the fifteen Cape towns voted at town meetings or through their representatives on the Barnstable Town Council for a non-binding referendum to support the creation of Cape Care, a single payer system for Cape Cod residents. In 2007, the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates voted to "support and encourage" the further development of Cape Care. Enabling legislation is the next step in the creation of Cape Care. Details of the Cape Care draft model to date are available on the web site, www.capecare.info.
