Candidates Get Chance to Unveil Energy Plans at October 28 Forum

WEST BARNSTABLE - Candidates for public office will participate in Voting Energy 2008, a political forum focused on energy issues to be held from 6:30pm-9pm on October 28 in Lecture Hall A at Cape Cod Community College (CCCC). This event is sponsored by Cape and Islands Renewable Energy Collaborative (CIRenew), WCAI and the CCCC Environmental Technology Program, with guidance from the Cape Cod League of Women Voters. The event will be moderated by WCAI’s Mindy Todd, host of The Point, and a portion of the discussion will be rebroadcast in the days preceding the election over WCAI.

Energy – from affordability to economic development, from national security to climate change – is a major concern for most Cape and Islands residents. This event will give voters a chance to learn where candidates stand on the issues.

“Voting is a critical way for individuals to influence energy-related decisions that have a big impact on our lives and community,” says Richard Lawrence, CCCC Clean Energy Program Coordinator. “Energy, the environment, and the economy are intertwined concerns this election season. By having a discussion focused on energy issues, we hope to help people make informed choices on November 4.”

“Voting Energy 2008” is a forum rather than a debate. The event will begin with an emphasis on the need for bipartisan action to address energy and climate challenges. All candidates at the federal, state, and county levels have been invited to participate and give an opening statement. Questions will be developed by CIRenew, the moderator, and members of the audience.

“In the next few years, comprehensive energy and climate policies will be implemented at the state level and are likely at the federal level, while the nation’s first offshore wind project may begin construction in Nantucket Sound,” says Chris Powicki, principal of WEEinfo Services. “Voters interested in stabilizing costs, creating jobs, reducing emissions, and maximizing benefits from locally abundant renewable resources need to know where candidates stand on the issues.”
