Man rescued after truck crashes into water

Sandwich pickup crashes into pondSANDWICH - There was a dramatic scene in Sandwich late this afternoon when a pickup truck went out of control and rolled over, crashed through some trees and wound up in Lawrence Pond off Great Hill Road around 5 PM. Bystanders worked to stabilize the vehicle and keep the victim above water until rescuers arrived. 17-year old Justin Heywood of Sandwich was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries. He faces a slew of charges including larceny of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of alcohol and operating to endanger. Man seriously injured after pinned by MV

SANDWICH - A man was seriously injured after being pinned under a vehicle. The victim was free when rescuers arrived at the scene at 22 Torrey Road around 4 PM. He was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital. It could not immediately be comfirmed if the man was working on the vehicle when he became trapped as further details were not immediately available.

Vineyard beaches closed by jellyfish

CHILMARK – No “Jaws” is not back but just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water another “fish” has forced the closure of beached in Chilmark. Portuguese man-a-war jellyfish began washing up on the beach and 5 people were stung. It follows another jellyfish “attack” in Westport. The jellyfish are rarely seen this far north this early but the prolonged feed of tropical moisture up the coast and warmer water temperatures may be to blame.

Fishermen rescued after grounding

CAPE COD – A coast guard helicopter plucked three fishermen from their vessel after it grounded and started taking on water. The Midnight Rider radioed in about 10 AM Friday that they were stuck in Muskeget Channel between Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket. The three are safe. Coast Guard crews are monitoring the scene for any pollution and warning mariners to stay away.

Driver seriously injured in head-on crash

SANDWICH – A head-on crash in Sandwich seriously injured one of the drivers. The crash happened about 5:50 AM in front of 129 Great Hills Road. Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life for about 20 minutes to free 21-year old Jennifer Gilrein of Sandwich who was taken to the Forestdale School and Medflighted to a Beth Israel Deaconees Medical Center in Boston. Two other people escaped serious injury. Sandwich Police are investigating the crash.

Man airlifted after island assault

NANTUCKET – One man was Medflighted from Nantucket to Massachusetts General Hospital around 1 AM after a reported case of domestic assault and battery. The victim suffered serious facial injuries. It was not immediately clear if an arrest had been made in the case. Further details were not immediately available.
