Cape Cod Computer Crime Unit part of investigation

A New Jersey man, accused of sexual exploitation of a child, appeared in US District Court in Boston Monday.  51-year-old Anthony Scarano of Sayreville, NJ, was originally charged with sexual exploitation of a child via production of child pornography.

According to authorities, Scarano befriended a minor on the website motherless.com in 2011. Scarano and the victim exchanged emails and reportedly began a relationship shortly thereafter.  At the time, Scarano told the victim he was 32-years-old.

At some point in 2012, according to a release from US Attorney Carmen Ortiz's Office, Scarano sent the victim videos and photos of himself "nude and engaged in sexual activities". Scarano is believed to have instructed the victim to do the same.

Charges were brought against Scarano following an investigation conducted by the United States Postal Inspection Service in Boston and the Cape Cod Computer Crime Unit.

Scarano will appear at a detention hearing on March 22. If convicted of the charges against him, Scarano could face a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison followed by supervised release, according to the statement from the US Attorney's Office.
