A Scituate man was sentenced to 13 1/2 years in federal prison Wednesday after pleading guilty in a Providence, RI court to filing false tax returns.
According to a release from the FBI, 47-year-old William L'Europa of Scituate pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the United States government and filing false tax returns. He was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release.
L'Europa and partner, former Rhode Island state legislator John J. McCauley, owned and operated L'Europa Public Adjusters LLC and PIA Restoration LLC out of Rhode Island.
The pair admitted to under-reporting business receipts for tax years 2007-2010 by nearly $1.8 million, according to the release. That translates into an underpayment of $500,000 in federal taxes.
McCauley received a similar sentence in December 2012.
Upon release, L'Europa and McCauley must also refile accurate tax returns for 2007-2011.
