Sandwich police lieutenant named new Harwich police chief

Lt. Guillemette chosen by Harwich selectmen Monday

Lt. David Guillemette will soon be Chief David Guillemette. Monday night the Harwich Board of Selectman voted unanimously to offer Lt. Guillemette the position as the town's new police chief. In an email, Harwich Town Administrator Christopher Clark said the appointment is contingent upon a a successfully negotiated employment contract.

Lt. Guillemette will be replacing Harwich Police Chief William Mason. Chief Mason will reach mandatory retirement age on June 30, 2015.  "Chief Mason has provided outstanding service to the community during his 15-year tenure," Clark said.

The lieutenant was one of four finalists for the position of top cop in Harwich. According to the June 3 Harwich Selectmen agenda packet, the Police Chief Search Committee reviewed 36 resumes. Eleven candidates made a preliminary cut and the list of eleven was whittled down to five candidates, four of whom were presented to the Board of Selectmen to review as finalists. The other three finalists in addition to Lt. Guillemette were Wellfleet Police Lt. Michael Hurley, Brewster Police Captain Heath Eldredge and one off-Cape finalist, Revere Police Lt. David Callahan.

The four candidates were interviewed by selectmen during an open session on June 3. The vote was cast to offer Lt. Guillemette the position on June 8.

Should contract negotiations be successful, Lt. Guillemette will start his position as head of the Harwich Police Department in mid- to late-July, Clark said. welcomes thoughtful comments and the varied opinions of our readers.
