While my family and I are relieved that I have been found not guilty of all charges arising from a residency check, no one won today.
There is nothing more humbling than facing a jury of your peers, knowing in your heart that your intentions were to enforce the School District’s policy, yet understanding that good intentions are not always enough.Being in the eye of a media storm has been an ordeal for my family, the King family, and the Mashpee community.
While I acknowledge and agree that I am passionate about my work and steadfastly driven to lead our district to excellence, I have been reminded of the value of communication, the importance of partnership and the responsibility of leadership.
For our schools, this ordeal has distracted attention away from what matters most – educating our students. I am saddened that this trial took the spotlight away from the great work that our teachers have been doing in the Mashpee Public Schools. Because of the commitment of our teachers, over the past two years, the Mashpee Public Schools have continually improved, as has our accountability-rating based on student success on statewide tests.
For our families, I’m sorry for how these charges and the subsequent trial detracted from the Mashpee pride that we so want to instill in our educational community.
For my family, the King family, our staff and the families of Mashpee, I am sorry for what occurred but relieved that this chapter is behind us. As I look to the future, it is my greatest hope that Isabel King finds fulfillment and success during the remainder of her senior year at Mashpee High School.
You cannot go through this experience without it changing you.
As a former History teacher, I taught my students about innocence until being proven guilty. I never anticipated that this standard would be applied to me so personally and professionally.
One walks away more humble, more reflective, and more appreciative of the little things. I better understand that throughout our lives, each decision we make and every action we take must be made with great and thoughtful care.
I look forward to doing what I love most: working with teachers, students, and families to move our school system forward.
In the steadfast pursuit of excellence, I remain sincerely yours,
Brian A. Hyde
