Mrs. Joan Claire (Harrigan) Balfe, a longtime resident of Falmouth, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at JML Care Center in Falmouth. She was the daughter of Eva and Joseph Harrigan. She was the loving wife of John J. Balfe III for 47 years (deceased in 2003). She is survived by her son, John of Middleton MA, her three grandchildren: Nina, Amy and John, and her daughter-in-law, Denise; and her sister Barbara Hertz, of New Jersey. Predeceased by brothers: Paul and David. Also leaves many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was born in Arlington MA; graduated Winchester High School in 1950 and obtained her RN from Cambridge City Hospital. She was active in many volunteer pursuits over the years. She loved to travel and often reminisced about her trip to North Africa and Europe. Family was a strong part of her life and she spoke of these years as “living my passion”. She lived a life of adventure and fulfillment- loved to read and enjoyed helping and meeting all sorts of new people and felt blessed with many good friends and a close and supportive family.
Visiting hours will be held from 4:00-8:00 PM on Friday, March 18th in the Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, FALMOUTH CENTER. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 19th in the St. Patrick’s Church, 511 Main Street, Falmouth. Burial is private.
