Provincetown to hold street performer/noise public forum October 11

Citizens encouraged to attend

The Town of Provincetown will hold a public forum next month to solicit feedback on the current street performers and noise by-laws. The forum will be on Tuesday, October 11 at 6 p.m. in the Judge Welsh Room of the Provincetown Town Hall.

Citizens are enouraged to attend. The public is also encouraged to submit written comments about the bylaw to the Provincetown Board of Selectmen. Such comments may be mailed to: Board of Selectmen, Town Hall, 260 Commercial Street, Provincetown, MA 02657 or emailed to [email protected] Written comments must be received by 12 p.m. on Monday, October 10.

The town's website reads, 'Provincetown welcomes street performers as part of our essential character. Your participation as an artist is as important to us as is the well-being of our residents, business owners and other visitors." Under the town's general by-laws, street performances are covered under Chapter 9-4. The current by-law requires that all street performers acquire a permit through the Provincetown Police Department. Under the by-law, performances including acting, singing, pantomime, juggling, magic, dancing, reading and reciting, all conducted live and in person are allowed. Performances are allowed in public areas only, seven days a week between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. 

Noise is addressed under Chapter 13 (Prohibited Activities) of the general by-laws. Under the current by-law, $50 non-criminal disposition penalties are issued for each offense. welcomes thoughtful comments and the varied opinions of our readers.
