Barnstable School Leadership Crisis Continues

"Stonewall Meg" remains silent as parents demand answers

Parents of children at Barnstable United Elementary School and Barnstable Intermediate School remain frustrated as Superintendent Meg Mayo Brown maintains her silence on the sudden shift of administrators at the two schools.

On Tuesday, August 29th the superintendent sent an email to parents at BUE to report that Principal Mary Sullivan "is on leave from the district" and BIS principal James Anderson assumed her duties.  The superintendent appointed BIS assistant principal Beth Deneen as interim principal at that building.

Parents were alarmed by the sudden change, most especially those at BIS - which lost a well-respected principal with virtually no notice.  Many BUE parents want to know the circumstances of their principal's "leave".

Since Tuesday the superintendent has not responded to inquiries from Cape Cod Today and the Cape Cod Times requesting information on what happened at Barnstable United Elementary School.

Why would a principal be placed "on leave" days before the school year begins?  She could be ill and on medical leave, she might be on terminal leave towards retirement or the leave could be part of a contract buy-out.  There is no indication of any wrongdoing on the part of the absent principal so far as we can determine.

According to parents who spoke to us, Superintendent Mayo Brown's failure to communicate on this issue is further eroding parental confidence in her ability to lead the Barnstable school district.

The agenda for the Barnstable School Committee's meeting on Wednesday night includes 20 minutes to discuss the evaluation of Superintendent Mayo-Brown.

What can parents and taxpayers do?

The email addresses of the members of the Barnstable School Committee appear below.  If you have a concern about the Superintendent's handling of the BUE/BIS leadership changes, we suggest you email one or all of the school committee members prior to their taking up the superintendent's evaluation Wednesday night.

We also note that two school committee members, including chair Margeaux Weber, are up for re-election in November.
