From the Town of Orleans:
Well folks, it’s that time of year again. The opportunistic plovers have returned to our storm ravaged beach in great numbers and settled in to the pristine habitat created by the nor’easters. Unfortunately for the beachgoers, this influx will likely lead to Nauset Beach South and Nauset Spit closing around the beginning of June. It is at this time that we ask the beach community for patience and understanding. The Town is mandated by State and Federal regulations to protect these threatened species. Please respect all symbolic fencing and avoid the cordoned off areas.
It is in everyone’s best interest that these first nest attempts are successful. If these first nests fail, the plovers will be forced to re-nest, which will restart the clock and lead to longer closures. We understand this is frustrating, but please allow the Natural Resources staff to do their job so we can get the beaches open as soon as possible. Enjoy the holiday weekend out on the beach!
