BOSTON – On Wednesday July 25, 2018, both the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts State Senate enacted S.2631, An Act to promote and enhance civic engagement. This piece of legislation establishes a Civics Project Trust Fund to assist with the development of a history and social science curriculum framework, including civics education for collaboration with institutions of higher education and other stakeholder organizations; and establishes a competitive evaluation of a student-led civics project, available to all eighth grade students.
Representative Will Crocker (R-Centerville), a member of the Civics Conference Committee, was delighted over the bill’s enactment, “My colleagues and I on the conference committee worked very hard to ensure that this bill provided a more comprehensive basis for civics education in the Commonwealth. As a former civics teacher myself, I have seen firsthand the need for civics education in our classrooms. I am so pleased that my colleagues in both the House and Senate also recognized this need, as this bill was passed unanimously in both chambers. Providing students with a stronger civics education ensures that our future leaders will have the proper tools to make a difference in our communities.”
Additionally, the bill establishes a high school voter challenge program, which would provide opportunities for outreach and for all eligible students to register or pre-register to vote on any participating high school campus. The bill would also require each public school serving students in the eighth grade and each public high school to provide students with the opportunity to participate in at least 1 student-led civics project.
The bill now moves to the Governor’s desk for a signature.
