MASHPEE - A semi-retired pediatrician was arrested Tuesday, charged with possessing and distributing child pornography, according to a release from the United States Attorney's Office in Boston. Dr. Daniel O'Hern's Quashnet Valley condominium was raided by authorities following an investigation into peer-to-peer file sharing.
Police seized digital devices including computers, hard drives and other media storage devices from the home, according to the US Attorney. According to the affidavit, officials discovered several images of "children being sexually exploited" including victims described as "pubescent minor females".
Following his arrest, Dr. O'Hern appeared before Magistrate Judge Robert B. Collings in Boston. He is being held until his detention hearing on Friday in Boston.
If convicted, O'Hern faces up to 20 years in prison, with a minimum sentence of 5 years, according to the release.
O'Hern practiced medicine in Middleton, New York with Dunning Road Pediatrics and Crystal Run Healthcare. He is the author of "Common Sense Pediatrics for Parents" published by America Star Books in 2011. According to the book's description on Amazon.com, it represents O'Hern's "thirty years of experience in pediatrics" and was written "for the lay person".

The case is being investigated by the US Attorney's Office, the US Postal Inspection Service and the Mashpee and Barnstable Police Departments. Kenneth G. Shine of the US Attorney's Major Crimes Unit will be the lead prosecutor on the case.
