One weekend, Two odd crimes

Is the pen mightier than the sword?

Last weekend’s crime news for Barnstable County read like one of those “odd news” pieces we see on national news sites.

At approximately 1 a.m. Saturday a 40-year-old suspect was arrested by Barnstable police after he allegedly stabbed a 34-year-old Centerville man with a ballpoint pen near the 19th Hole Tavern in Hyannis.

At 1:35 a.m. Sunday morning, Bourne police responded to a reported assault at 355 Shore Road. The police arrested a 28-year-old suspect for allegedly attacking the victim with a Samurai sword. Police recovered a sword alleged to be used in the incident.

Nearly everyone on Cape Cod is aware of the excellent efforts of local law enforcement to contain violent crime. No matter how much the police do there will always be “breakthrough” crimes such as the ones alleged over the weekend.

The past weekend poses the quintessential question in journalism: Is the pen mightier than the sword?
