DENNIS – Grigoriadis, Athena (Orfanakou), 73, of Dennis, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 7, after a long battle with cancer, at the McCarthy Care Center, surrounded by her family.Athena was the beloved wife of George Grigoriadis, mother of Georgia Smith of Gloucester, MA and Maria Grigoriadis of West Roxbury, MA. Athena had three sisters, the late Eirini Menoutis of Montreal, Eugenia Starogiani of Xirokambi and the late Rita Kaldis of Dennis. She also had many dear nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and friends.Athena, a Spartan to the end, was born February 20, 1943 in Xirokambi, Sparta, Greece, the daughter of Anthony and Georgia Orfanakou. She moved to Montreal in 1962 to join her family. There she met and married George in 1967 and moved to Astoria in 1968. Her two daughters were born in New York, and the family moved to Cape Cod in 1974. Athena was a very active and supportive member of the St. George Greek Orthodox Church on Cape Cod, which brought her great joy. She enjoyed teaching the church youth group traditional Greek folk dancing, and the group performed at the annual church Greek Festival and surrounding community venues. For many years, Athena taught Greek school, grades 1-5, at the church and fostered a strong learning of Greek grammar, literature, history, and mythology in her students. Known as 'Mrs. G.' to her students, she was much loved. She was also a Sunday school teacher for the older children, and her vast knowledge of Orthodox theology and dogma fostered understanding of their religion, and often resulted in complex discussions of faith and belief with her students.Education and learning for herself and others was important to Athena and she earned her GED and completed classes at Cape Cod Community College. She always said that a college degree was priceless. Athena loved to garden and needlepoint, and cook delicious Greek entrees and desserts, which family and friends enjoyed during holidays and family events. The family would like to express gratitude to the entire staff at the HopeHealth McCarthy Care Center for their amazing care, compassion and dedication.
