Elizabeth J. Beattie passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 6th at the Epoch Senior Healthcare of Brewster at the age of 92. She was the daughter of Oneita and Luke Burns of Black River, NY.She was predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Beattie, the love of her life, who passed away in November, 2014. Elizabeth is survived by her son, Gavin of Eastham, MA and her daughters, Susan Pipe of Watertown, NY, Maureen Benfield and her husband, John of Port Washington, NY and Martha Pritchard and her husband, Kevin of Mentor, OH. She has six grandsons and four great granddaughters.Elizabeth graduated from Black River High School in 1941. She earned her nursing degree from the College of Saint Rose in Albany. As a senior, she was selected to the Rose Court. After graduating she went on to work in obstetrics at Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown. She and Charles were married in 1946 and before moving to Pleasantville, NY in 1948, they lived in veteran housing while she worked at Cortland Hospital. Many family vacations were spent on the Cape which greatly influenced their decision to move to Eastham in 1978.She referred to herself as an "old nurse", frequently volunteering for the Council on Aging, conducting blood pressure screenings for seniors. Her love of gardening was not limited her own yard but extended to the beautification of the traffic islands along Route 6, through her association with the Eastham Forum. Elizabeth crafted beautiful pieces of needlepoint and woven baskets that serve as treasures for her friends and family. She is well known by her loved ones for her endless search for unique and delicious recipes.There are no calling hours.
