Irene E. (Callander) Weeks, 93, of Falmouth, passed away on Thursday January 21, 2016. She was born in Minneapolis, MN to the late Joseph and Eleanor (O’Brien) Callander. She was wife of the late George E. Weeks, Jr. for 50 years.
Irene was a WWII veteran for the US Navy. She was the first woman in her hometown to join the WAVES in WWII. As Northhampton City Treasurer, she was the first woman to have been elected to town office. She also served as National Treasurer for the WAVES Association. At the age of 90, Irene retired from the Kitchen Corner in Falmouth. She also loved the Red Sox and New England Patriots.
Irene is survived by her children, George E. Weeks III of Belmont NH, Gregory E. Weeks of Hatfield MA, and Margaret E. Weeks Thomas of Middleboro MA; her grandchildren, Timothy, Heidi, James, Aaron, and Samantha; her great grandchildren, Leighton, Aubrey, and Lilly-Alexandria; her sister Jean Ansanitis of Pittsfield, brothers Robert Callander of E. Hampton, and Joseph Callander of Vermont; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 10-11:30 AM on Wednesday, Jan 27th at Chapman Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth, followed by a funeral Mass to be celebrated at Noon at St. Anthony’s Church, 167 East Falmouth Hwy (Rt. 28) East Falmouth. Burial will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
