James G. Williams, of Centerville, Massachusetts died at home surrounded by family on Thursday, January 14.
Born February 15, 1955 in Dorchester, Massachusetts to Joseph A. and Ann (Meagher) Williams. James was the proud big brother of seven children. After many years summering on the Cape, the family moved to Osterville in 1967. Educated in the public school system, he was a 1974 graduate of Barnstable High School. After receiving his B.S. from Framingham State College in 1979, he returned to his beloved Cape Cod. He worked summers for 17 years as a life guard and swimming instructor at beaches throughout the Town of Barnstable.
In 1984 while life guarding at Joshua’s Pond he met the love of his life Lori Elder of Chateauguay, Quebec who was working as a nanny. After a long-distance courtship they married in 1986. Together they owned and operated the Mid-Cape Answering Service for thirty years.
His volunteer and charitable activities were extensions of his deep commitment to family and faith. A communicant at Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, he sang in the choir for four decades. A dedicated member of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, he is the immediate past president of the parish chapter. He nurtured children as a swim instructor, most recently with special needs children at the YMCA of Cape Cod, where he was the 1999 volunteer of the year. He administered the youth league as well as refereeing soccer, additionally he coached youth baseball and basketball.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by son Justin, his wife Christina (DeRosa) and their children Jillian Grace and Conner George of Bourne; son Timothy of Centerville; sister Mara Williams and husband Tom Hilsdon of Brattleboro, Vermont; brother Gordon and wife Lisa (Varona) Williams of Centerville; brother Mark Williams of Centerville; sister Antoinette and husband Brian Zugel of Centerville; sister Andrea and husband Scott Still of Trenton, NJ; numerous nieces and nephews on-Cape and in Canada. He was predeceased by his father and brother A. Scott Williams.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, January 18 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at John Lawrence Funeral Home, 3778 Falmouth Road, Marstons Mills, MA 02648. A Funeral Mass will take place Tuesday, January 19 at 1:00 PM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 76 Wianno Avenue, Osterville, MA 02655.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent DePaul in care of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
