Jayne A. Starosta

Jayne Anne Starosta, 84, a resident of Falmouth, MA for nearly 60 years and a 20 year winter resident of The Moorings at Vero Beach, FL died on September 12, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving family. Jayne was born on September 16, 1930 in Waltham, MA to her parents John William and Alyce Farquhar.  As a child, she lived in Sturbridge and Southbridge, MA.  Jayne graduated from Mary E. Wells High School in Southbridge where she made life long friends with a special group of seven women nicknamed “The Gang” who claim they never have had a cross word between them.  She attended the Eastman School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Rochester, NY graduating in 1950 and then became a clinical instructor of dental hygiene at the Forsyth Dental Infirmary in Boston. At age sixteen, Jayne met her future husband Dr. Norman (Bud) Starosta while riding a bicycle with her girlfriends. They were married at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Southbridge on June 27, 1953.  The newlyweds spent their honeymoon on Cape Cod which is when they first fell in love with the town of Falmouth. In 1956, following her husband’s assignment at the U.S. Naval base in Argentia, Newfoundland, the couple moved to Falmouth to start a family and to begin Dr. Starosta’s private dental practice there. Mrs. Starosta was an accomplished golfer and a member of the 18 Hole Womens Group at the Woods Hole Golf Club.  At the club, she served (2) three year terms on the Woods Hole Golf Club Board of Governors and served as their first female Membership Committee Chairperson. She served as Vice-President and then as President of The Moors Association where she and her husband kept their beautiful home. Most recently, she volunteered as a docent at the Woods Hole Historical Museum. Jayne was an early volunteer of The Samaritans and rose to become President of their Board of Governors. She was a co-founder of Safe Place, a support group for those who have lost someone to suicide.  In 1990, while serving at The Samaritans, Jayne was honored by President George H.W. Bush as a Point of Light. An avid reader, Jayne was an active member of her beloved book clubs for over twenty years.  She loved to take daily walks. Above all, she loved her ever-growing family, keeping track of every birthday and giving thoughtful gifts to each child, grandchild and great-grandchild. She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Norman (Bud) Starosta of Falmouth and her five children, Stephen, Jan and her husband John Fitzpatrick, John and his wife Lydia, Peter and his wife Cynthia and Beth and her husband Dr. Stephen Fox.  Also surviving are 12 grandchildren: Hillary Fitzpatrick Peterson, Jake, Joseph and Hannah Fitzpatrick, Annabelle, Nicholas and Claire Starosta, Henry and Theodore Starosta, Jack, Oliver and Charles Fox and one great grandchild, Lucia Fitzpatrick. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 17th, 4 to 7 pm at Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 584 Route 28A in West Falmouth, MA.  A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 18th, 12 noon at St. Joseph’s Church, 33 Millfield Street, Woods Hole, MA.  All are welcome.  Burial will be private.
