Joan E. Flaherty

Joan E. Flaherty, of East Orleans, Massachusetts, died on August 26 after a sudden illness. She was the adored wife of Robert P. Flaherty for 61 years. They lived for many years in Worcester, where Bob and Paul Kelleher, his brother-in-law, owned and operated Kelleher & Flaherty Transportation, and where they raised their four children, Patricia Anderson and her husband Thomas, of Bedford NH; Anne Barry, of Holden MA; Robert P. Flaherty, Jr, of Quincy MA; and Mark Flaherty and his wife Maura, of Boston. The Flahertys were longtime parishioners at Blessed Sacrament Parish.Joan was born and grew up in Providence, RI, where she was the third of four daughters of the late John and Margaret (Gretta) Gallogly, both of Ireland. She attended Mt. Pleasant High School and Roger Williams General Hospital and received a BS from Anna Maria College in Paxton. She proudly worked as a registered nurse at the VA Hospital and later as a psychiatric nurse for the Massachusetts Dept. of Mental Health in Southbridge and Westborough. She continued her caregiving after retirement as a volunteer nurse with St. Joan of Arc Parish in Orleans. Her dear surviving sisters are Margaret Shea of Orleans, Barbara Barnes and her husband Peter, of Edison NJ, and Patricia Norberg of Rancho Santa Fe CA. Joan enjoyed gardening, hiking, yoga, and especially playing mahjong with her friends. She most loved being "Trendy Grandma" to her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tara Hansen and her husband Thomas, Brigit Hansen, Thomas Anderson and his wife Meghan, Charlie Anderson, Bobby Anderson, Patrick Anderson, Kerry Georgantas and her husband Nicholas, Nora Georgantas, Kevin Barry and his wife Caitlin, John Barry, Nolan Flaherty and Brenna Flaherty. The funeral will be at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, Sept. 1 from Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Parkway, Orleans, followed by a Mass celebrating Joan's life at 10:30 AM at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans. Burial will be on a later date. Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours on Monday, Aug. 31, from 4-7 PM.
