John J. Harrington, Ph.D., of Bourne, passed away after a long illness at his home on Sunday, March 6, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Ellen (nee Witter) Harrington for 39 years. John was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1942 to John J. Harrington, Sr. and Ruth (Cummings) Harrington. He received a Ph.D. in Pastoral Counseling at Boston University as well as graduate degrees in Theology and Philosophy. John worked as a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Boston and since 1990 in Bourne. He was a member of the Town of Bourne Board of Health, Chairman of School Committee and a member of the Board of Selectman.
John had a variety of hobbies including model trains, bird watching, and gardening. He was also an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by his son William Harrington and his wife Tara of Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ, his son Matthew Harrington of Bourne, MA, his grandson Liam Patrick, his brothers Reverend Donald J. Harrington, C.M. of Bourne, MA, and Jay Harrington and his wife Maureen of Bridgewater, MA. Family and friends will honor and remember John’s life by gathering for visiting hours on from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Thursday, March 10 at Chapman Cole and Gleason Funeral Home at 584 West Falmouth Highway (Route 28A), West Falmouth. A Funeral Mass will follow on Friday, March 11 at St. John the Evangelist Church at 841 Shore Road, in Pocasset, MA at 11AM.
