Robert A. Noonan, 91, of North Port, FL died on April 3, 2016. He was the devoted husband of the late Mary Cavanaugh for 63 years before her passing in 2010. Robert was the son of John and Anita Noonan. He was born is Brockton, MA on April 18, 1924. Robert was the youngest of eight children all whom predeceased him; Gilbert, Francis, David, Lucille Hastey, Malcolm, John Jr., and Paul.
Robert was a career Navy man. Upon graduating from Brockton High School in 1942, Robert signed into the Navel V-5 Flight Program completing flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida. In 1944, he was ordered to a replacement squadron for subsequent duty in the Pacific theater. He went on the inactive status list in October 1945.
After returning to Falmouth, he attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston studying commercial art. He was then employed by the New England Telephone Company.
In June of 1952, during the Korean War, he was recalled to active duty. A tour of duty in the Atlantic Fleet was followed by duty as a flight instructor in the advanced training command. Further duty included assignments at the Naval Intelligence School, Washington, D.C., Fleet Intelligence Center, Port Lyautey, Morocco, Iceland and Norfolk, Virginia. He was later assigned to duty at the Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff at SAC Headquarters, Omaha, Nebraska. While there, he completed studies at the University of Omaha and graduated in June of 1969. His final assigned duty before retiring in July of 1969 was at the Fleet Intelligence Center in Hawaii.
Upon his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Noonan built their home at Gray Rocks, North Falmouth. For many years, they traveled back and forth to Florida for the winters. After 29 years of fishing, golfing and doing some remodeling and repair work, Mr. and Mrs. Noonan moved permanently to La Casa in North Port, Florida. For the last five years, Robert called home North Port as well as his home in East Falmouth, MA with his nephew and niece, John and Donna Noonan. Robert is survived by many additional nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Calling hours will be 4-7pm on Friday, April 8, 2016 at Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home at 584 West Falmouth Highway (Rt. 28A) in West Falmouth, MA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 10:00am at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 481 Quaker Road, North Falmouth, MA followed by an interment at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Gifford Street, Falmouth. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Building/Maintenance Fund, San Pedro Church, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port, Florida 34287.
