Ruth B. Burrough died on January 21, 2016 at Heritage of Falmouth after a long, full and good life. She was 95. Ruth was born on April 13, 1920 in Agawam, Massachusetts to Helen Wood Bowman and Albert Lawrence Bowman, She moved to Falmouth when she was six years old, attended Falmouth Schools and graduated from Lasell Junior College. Her life was devoted to her family, her community and to her work as a real estate broker.
Ruth was involved in numerous community affairs throughout her life, including volunteer service as president of the League of Women Voters, president of the Falmouth Nursing Association and as a board member of the board of the Upper Cape Visiting Nurses Association.
She was on the original building committee for the Falmouth Hospital and later served as a board member and president of the Board. Ruth’s commitment as a board member of the Cape Cod Community College led to her recognition as an honorary trustee with a scholarship established in her name. Ruth was a real estate broker with Real Estate Associates and a member of the Cape Cod Board of Realtors. Her leadership and vision made it possible to conserve Beebe Woods with the generous support of Joseph and Josephine Lilly.
Ruth was predeceased by Arnold H. (Bud) Burrough, her husband of 63 years, and her son, Arnold H. (Buddy) Burrough, Jr., who died tragically in a car accident at 21.
She is survived by her two daughters Gretchen B. Morse of Charlotte, VT and Nancy B. Barry of Falmouth and sons-in-law James L. Morse and David A. Barry; five grand-daughters and their spouses, Rebecca Morse and Jerald Swope of S. Burlington VT; Rachel and Mitch Scarborough of Castle Rock CO.; Samantha and Kent Baker of Ponte Vedra FL; Elizabeth and Eric Bain of Atlanta GA; and Katherine and Ihsan Speede of Hingham MA. She has nine great grandchildren.
Ruth is also survived by her sister, Marion Coleman of Del Ray Beach FL and her children and grandchildren.
Ruth’s family would like to thank the staff of Heritage, where she lived for 5 years for their loving care, and the VNA Hospice for care at the end of her life.
