On this day in 1999, the New York Times reported on the fact that Ballston Beach on the oceanside in Truro is known locally as "Psychiatrist Beach". Local folks have known of this beach's sandy sanity rep for decades, and it is not uncommon in August to see a wealthy summer visitor with his analyst alongside him. This beach is also famous as the favorite of NYC literati as well.

Banish any image of a Shrinkland where the streets are peopled by bearded, strategically taciturn men and motherly but penetrating women all asking each other, ''And how did that make you feel?''
This is not even close. It is just one more quaint Cape Cod town swamped by vacationers of all ilks in summer, one with pleasant sandy surroundings and a reputation for attracting intellectuals...
We call them 'the psychs,' and in August we say, 'The psychs are here,' '' said Elden Gray, 86, a retired grocer from near Boston who has summered here for 50 years. ''This town is known for that.''
