Yoga which originated in ancient India has now become immensely popular all around the world because it not only helps in keeping you physically healthy and active but also helps you to keep your mind calm and focused.

Basically, yoga is a practice or exercise involving physical, mental and spiritual discipline. Yoga can be practised in two ways

  • By Asanas (Postures): It is practised to focus concentration on specific body parts.
  • By Pranayama (Breathing Exercises): It helps integrating mind, body and soul together.

Let's discuss some of the Asanas:

1. ASANAS (POSTURES OR POSES):

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced yoga student, different yoga postures help in building fitness by developing balance, strength and flexibility to your body. There are some important things to be known while performing yoga.

  • In the beginning, do only those asanas which you can do easily.
  • Go slow and steady at your own pace in learning different asanas. Do not push yourself to perform a pose which your body is unable to do.
  • Breath is the key to yoga, which needs to be focused right from the start.

Some of the basic yoga asana are:

 

# TADASANA (MOUNTAIN POSE):

Tadasana, Mountain Pose or Samasthiti is the basis of many other standing asanas. Being one of the modern yoga exercises, it's not mentioned and described in the medieval texts of yoga. In Sanskrit tada means mountain and the name tadasana comes from there. It's a standing pose in yoga which helps in strengthening knees, thighs and ankles. As a major group of your muscles are involved while doing this asana it helps in improving focus, concentration and stamina.

 

# VRIKSHASANA (TREE POSE):

Vrikshasana or tree pose is one of the standing asanas which involves balancing of your body. It is a very popular exercise in modern yoga. Vrikshasana helps in strengthening the thighs, calves, ankles, and vertebral column. This asana helps to relieve sciatica and reduces flat feet. It enhances your concentration and also helps you in making your body flexible, stable and your clams your mind.

 

# BHUJANGASANA (COBRA POSE) :

The eighth pose of the 12 Surya Namaskar poses is the Bhujangasana. It is also called the cobra pose. It is the Ashtanga yoga style performed for 15 to 30 seconds. Abdomen, Shoulders, Thorax and Lungs are stretched in this asana. Bhujangasana helps in strengthening vertebral column and stimulating the digestive, reproductive and urinary systems. It also regulates metabolism. It helps in relieving sciatica and asthma.

 

2. PRANAYAMA (BREATHING EXERCISES) :

 

Prana means the energy of life(breath) and Yama means control. So Pranayama means exercises which help in controlling the breath. Pranayama can help in healing your mind and soul, and calms you from anxiety, stress which further help to overcome depression, insomnia and acts as an energy booster with increased self-awareness.

 

# SUKHASANA PRANAYAMA:

Sukhasana is an easy and comfortable pose in yoga which is the best-suited body posture for meditation. It can be practised by both the beginners as well as advanced practitioners. In Sanskrit, Shukran means pleasure, comfort and ease, and Sukhasana comes from this word. This asana can be done by people of all ages. Sukhasana strengthens your back, stretches your knees and ankles. You can sit in this pose as long as you feel comfortable. Sukhasana makes your mind and body calm and peaceful by reducing exhaustion, stress and anxiety.

 

# UJJAYI PRANAYAMA:

In Ujjayi Pranayama inhaling or breathing from both nostrils at the same time with half-closed glottis (part of the larynx) is practised. This exercise involves making a sound from the throat. This technique of breathing is helpful in thyroid and many other throat related problems.

 

# ANULOM VILOM PRANAYAMA:

Anulom Vilom Pranayama is the technique of alternate breathing. While practising this exercise inhale slowly by one nostril closing the other by your thumb and exhale from the other nostril closing it with your ring and middle finger. This Pranayama exercise has many health benefits as it helps in curing heart diseases, asthma, depression, migraine, high blood pressure, etc.
