Gertrude M. (O’Connell) Deery, 87, of Mashpee died on August 17, 2015 of natural causes with her beloved granddaughter Kristen Antis at her side. She was the beloved wife of the late William J. Deery to whom she was married to for 54 years.
Born on May 29, 1928 in Boston, she was the daughter of Ina Green of Marstons Mills and Michael O’Connell of Winchester. Raised in Roslindale, she married William in 1949 and moved to Dedham for 35 years before moving to Mashpee in 1984, where she has lived for the past 31 years.
Gertrude graduated from Roslindale High school in 1946. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Dedham from 1954 to 1984 and the Parish of Christ the King in Mashpee since 1984.
Arts and crafts and selling her wares at local craft fairs were Gertrude’s hobbies. She also enjoyed golfing and lunching with her friends.
She was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Gertrude is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Patricia and George Garaffo of Westwood, Maureen and Jay Hanley of Dedham and Kathryn and Richard Shimota of Lower Gwynedd, PA, her grandchildren, Kristin Antis of Mashpee, William Barnett of Shrewsbury, Maura Patton of Wilmington, NC, Joseph Hanley of Boston, and Kaitlin, Meaghan and Carly Shimota of Lower Gwynedd, PA and her great grandchildren, Sam, Grace and Hadley Antis, Cole, Jack and Nicholas Barnett, and Luke Patton.
A period of visitation will be from 9 – 10 am on Thursday, August 20th in Christ the King Chapel, followed by a Funeral Mass beginning at 10 am. Burial will be held at 2:30 in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, West Roxbury.
