Joan K. Oetheimer of West Dennis, MA, 87, passed away on February 17 in Vero Beach, FL with her loving family at her side. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1928, Joan was the sixth of seven children of Arthur J. Coakley and Helen (Dunne) Coakley. She met her husband of almost 62 years Edward G. Oetheimer when they both worked at the same bank branch in Manhattan and they were married in April 1954.Joan and Ed followed Joan's parents to New Jersey and raised their family in Park Ridge, NJ. Family vacations were spent at the Jersey Shore or Cape Cod, often with Joan's extended family. Following retirement, they relocated to Cape Cod to be closer to their three children in Massachusetts. Joan loved hosting her children and grandchildren at her house on Kelley's Pond in West Dennis. She also enjoyed playing tennis with friends and played into her 80's. In 2000, Joan and Ed purchased a condo in Vero Beach, FL and were "snowbirds" from then on.Joan had an indomitable spirit and irrepressible personality. She was the life of every gathering. Even as she fought cancer over the last years of her life, she joked continually with her doctors. Joan is survived by her husband Edward, her sister Anne Gesner of Dennisport, her son Richard and wife Jill of Needham, MA, her son Robert of N. Quincy, MA, her daughter Janet Coppinger and husband Glenn of Needham, her three grandchildren, Kate, Chris and Kevin, and many nieces and nephews. Friends and relatives are invited to attend visitation Friday February 26 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main Street, West Harwich. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday Feb. 27 at Holy Trinity Church, 246 Main Street, West Harwich. Burial will follow immediately afterward at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Route 134, South Dennis. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan's honor may be made to the Mass General Cancer Center, MGH Development Office, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114.
