John S. Howitt, 80, of Mashpee, MA passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 7, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Thorp) Howitt and the son of the late Thomas and Annie R. Howitt of Mattapan, MA.
John graduated from Boston Technical High School in 1953. He earned his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1958. John worked as a Technical Engineering Manager for Corning Glass Works in Corning, NY. At Corning, John worked on the development of the ‘honeycomb ceramic substrate’ that forms the heart of the catalytic converter, significantly improving the air quality of automobiles.
After 25 years with Corning Glass Works, John continued his career working for Selee Corporation in Hendersonville, NC and Allied-Signal in Tulsa, OK.
When it came time to retire, John and Patricia came home to Massachusetts and settled on Cape Cod. John filled his retirement years with service to the Cape Cod community. With his life-long interest in sports, John served for ten years as the General Manager of the Hyannis Mets, one of the teams in the reputable Cape Cod Baseball League. John also facilitated a popular sports discussion class at the Academy for Lifetime Learning (A.L.L.) at Cape Cod Community College. Additionally, for over 15 years, John spent 3 days per month providing free business mentoring advice to local entrepreneurs as part of the Hyannis chapter of S.C.O.R.E.
John was a proud husband, father, brother and friend who will be dearly missed by all. In addition to his wife Patricia of 53 years, John is survived by 3 children, John S. “Jake” Howitt Jr. and wife Kim of Seattle, WA, Elizabeth Howitt and husband Michael Daly of Canton, MA and Allison Howitt of Nyack, NY, and his brother Andrew Howitt of Westwood, MA. John is predeceased by his brother Thomas Howitt Jr.
A visitation will be held at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home 74 Algonquin Ave. (Rte 151) in Mashpee, MA on Friday January 15, 2016 from 5pm to 7pm. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth at 840 Sandwich Rd, East Falmouth, MA on Saturday January 16, 2016 at 11:00am. A private burial will be held at a later date.
